This fine barque, which arrived in Kaipira on the 2nd of February, is one of the largest vessels that ever ascended the Wairoa River, being of 957 tons register. She is built of iron, by Flugers and Vanßorliler, of Amsterdam, iii 1883. Her first voyage was to China with a general cargo, and after her return was sold to her present owners, J. M. Jonnasen and Co., Norway, who bad her for some time in the Baltic trade. Since then she had traded principally between the Australian colonies and Africa, carrying general merchandise as cargoes. During these voyages the Cathrina has proved a fast sea boat, as on one occasion ane made the passage from Port Natal to Adelaide in twenty-three days, almost a record passage. Her last voyage, from the Caiie to Kaipara, she performed in 37 days, including a week's detention off the coast. On the morning of the 2nd of February, while becalmed 40 miles from the coaet of this island, the captain and crew had »splendid view of the eclipse of the sun, it being almost visible , from the beginning to end, uninterrupted by v loareely a cloud. In many a gale, in which i theC*tliriua had proved a splendid sea boat, ■tl)e mom severe ever encountered was off the • ■ft&H" Zealand coast, when she waa driven by - the itreugtli of the tempest a hundred miles •esward. frequently during the storm, the •pray ifrom the huge billows enveloped the ' ( vMHl.fcom atom to stern, so that the uilors could icafody see a few yards before them. ' Dnderitormsails, uml after dancing for three d»ye on the heaving billows, the L»dy of Sarpabpre .came through it unscathed, and without the loss of sail or spar. The barque is commanded by Captain Samuelsen, a, ; highly energetic aud intelligent youug Norwegian, having for Ilia chief officer H. Eitlaud aud a crew of la men all told. The barque has commodious cabins, in every way adapted for a limited number of passengers, The.forecastle is large and well ventiluted, and the menu which the sailori were partaking of during our visit appeared substantial and, ample, aud evidently reliihed. She sailed'on Tuesday, the 13th, for Glasgow, with 817,000 feet sawn and baulk kauri, and no doubt if attended by her usual luck she will nuke the voyage within the usual time taken by homeward-bound vessels,
