♦ Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.— VICTORIAN DRINK STATISTICS. Melbourne, April 12. A total of 444,000 gallons of spirits weft manufactured in the colony last year, an increase of 42,000 compared with the previous year. The oxport of wine increased by 36,000 gallons. Tho quantity of beer brewed amounted to 14,492,000 gallons, a decrease of 5000 gallons. THE BUTLER CASE. Sydney, April 12. • The Alameda, which sailed for San Fran* Cisco to-day, via Auckland, takes representatives of all the daily newspapers, who are proceeding to Auckland for the purpose of interviewing Butler. Several detectives are also among the passengers. THE LAW OF LIBEL. Sydxky, April 12, Mr. Want promised the newspaper repre* sentatives that the Government would introduce a Bill to amend the law of libel to bring it into conformity with tho main provisions of the English Act. CHARGE AGAINST A BANK MANAGER. Melbourne, April 12. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of William Gillespie, manager of the Bir< chip Branch of the Commercial Bank, charged with forging a cheque for twenty* two pounds. He applied for leave on account of ill-health, but before a reply was received from the head office he had left the district. It is alleged serious irregularitier have been discovered in tho bank books. NEW ISSUE OF POSTAGE STAMPS, Sydney, April 12. The Postmaster-General limits the new issue of stamps to one penny, tiro penny, and twopence halfpenny. FIRE ON BOARD A STEAMER. Adelaide, April 12. A fire, which broke out on board the: steamer Bothwell Castle, was nob got under till late on Saturday night. Numbers i and 1 holds were pumped full of water, and the cargo has been greatly damaged, but the full extent is nob yet known. THE DROUGHT IN QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, April 12. Stock owners in the central and northern districts are strongly urging the Govern-' meat to allow cattle to cross the tick quarantine line.
