AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING.

FIBST DAY. The first day's sport in connection with the Auckland Trotting Club's Autumo Meeting was held at Potter's Paddock, Epsom, on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of some two thousand spectators. The management of the gathering, in the hands of the energetic secretary, Mr. C. P. Mark, assisted by a strong committee of management and Staff of officials, was carried out as capably as usual, every effort being made to provide for the pleasure and comfort of patrons. The various events were got off fairly well to advertised time, considerable improvement being noticeable iu this respect, a fact that will meet with the marked approval of visitors. Mr. A. R. Harris occupied the judge's box, and gave his decisions throughout with that promptitude and accuracy that has always signalised his judging, though in the case of the Autumn Handicap, where a close finish resulted between Topsail and First WhisDer, a section , of those present gave vent to their disapproval of Air. Harris' placing. This unsportsmanlike and most unwarrantable exhibition was certaiuly uncalled for, aud reflects only upon those who ; participated in it—the supporters of First Whisper—as the decision was undoubtedly a correct one, aud the judge a man upon whom 110 imputation can be oust. Mr. Vγ, Knight, the haudicappcr, was successful in producing several closely contested races, and the startiug was capably conducted by Mr. Geo. Ducts. During the afternoon the sum of £197410s was passed through the' totalisator in IU.J tickets, the machines being capably conducted by a large staff under the supervision of Mr. W. Bloomfield, and a capital luncheon was provided under the grandstand by Mr. Thos. MoEweu.
