TELEPHONE EXCHANGE.

TO THE EDITOK. Sir,— are at the present time about 1100 subscribers to the Telephone Exchange in Auckland,.and as each subscriber on application for connection has to pay £1 towards expenses, it seems the height of absurdity to me to suppose that the Telephone exchange does not at the present rate of subscription, pay working expenses. I look upon the proposed increased rate from £5 to £7 per annum as another attempt ol this " Liberal"'(?) Government to burden uy with additional taxation. I am surprised) that the Chamber of Commerce has not called a meeting of subscribers to the telephone, to consider the increase in the rate. My opinion is that a firm stand should be made by those to whom the telephone is not an absolute necessity, and if say 300 or 400 subscribers cease to continue their subscription, there can be little doubt that the Government will be heavy losers by th» increased rate,—l am, etc., Cot off on 14th.
