POLICE Wednesday. (.[Before Mr. H. W. Brabant, 5.J1.1

Drunkenness.— Lestrange, a familiar figure in the dock, was convicted of her third offence of drunkenness within six months, and fined 20s, with the option ot seven days. Since the accused made her first appearance at the Police Court she has spent over 20 years in gaol. A young girl named Elizabeth Pernell was fined 10s, with the alternative of 48 hours' for her second offence, and Annie Robertson was similarly punished. Several first offenders were dealt with. A Prohibited Person.— Mitohell, a " prohibited" person, found on licensed premises, to wit, the Star Hotel, Newton, was fined 20s with costs. Chimney on Fire. — Frederick Holland, the occupier of premises in Day street, Newton, the chimney of which caught fire, was fined Is with costs.

Breach of the School Attendance Act. —Peter Peterson, charged with failing to send his children to a public school, was fined 14s with costs.

Trespass.—Emanuel Underwood pleaded not guilty to having on April 2 trespassed on the premises of Louisa Katterns, and refused to leave when requested so to do. After hearing the evidence of Constable Finuerty and several witnesses, his Worship considered the case proved, but as the accused promised not to annoy the complainant in future, a nominal tine of Ss with costs was inflicted. Underwood refused to pay the fine, and the alternative was fixed at fourteen days' imprisonment. Alleged Assault and Robbery.—A man named William Small, charged with having on March 31 assaulted William Henry Stead, aud robbed him of £1 7», was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme I Court.
