RODNEY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

«, On Friday, tho 23rd, theexecutivo commiti tee of the Rodney Agricultural Society held a meeting in the Masonic Hall, Warkworth, ■ when there wero present : Messrs. T. C. ; Sainsbury (chairman), Hood, Trotter, Sanj key, Carrie, and the secretary. The object [ of the mooting was the revision of the prize ; list for the show to be held in February, i next. The sheep and grass seed classes ' obtained considerable attention, and some alterations were made from last year's • schedule. The fruit classes were passed ' over, being: delegated to the Fruitgrower*' ' Association. A letter was received from j Mr. W. J, Angovo resigning his position as j a member of the committee, as lie shortly , expected to remove from tho district. This was received with regret, and tohe election of a member in his place was deferred till some future meeting. Mr. Hood brought forward his motion of which he had given notice re freight of wool and other produce, I and suggested that a deputation should be : appointed to wait upon the agent of the Rose Casey. After discussion, during which anomalies in the charges for freight were mentioned as of frequent) occurrence, i it was agreed as a preliminary that the secretary should write for a schedule of the , present rates and charges on board the 1 steamers, and to call a meeting of the com--1 mittee when he had received a reply. lb will be a satisfaction to many of our settlers . that this society is recognising that it has [ other duties, some of much more importance ; than merely holding a show, and Mr. Hood I is to be congratulated on taking the step he , has done. Whether successful or not, it is i to be hoped ho will introduce further busii ness, so that the Society may become of ' some practical use and benefit to the settlement, as well as lead onward, showing the ' surrounding districts the practical valuo of ) obtaining by co-operation much-needed inJ formation on all subjects appertaining to . agriculture. On tho same evening as the above the Mahurangi Fruitgrowers' Executive Committee held a meeting in Rendall's old store for the purpose of preparing a schedule of i prizes to be submitted to the Rodney Agricultural Society for competition at the ' show to be held in February noxfc. A schedule prepared by Mr. J. D. Morison was approved of, and the secretary was requested to forward the same to tho Agricultural Society. Mr. B. H. McKinney showed to the members a pieco of baric from an apple tree containing a grub of cho codlin moth, which had been attacked by a fungus that had apparently killed, the grub, and he stated this was only a sample of what ho had noticed was proceeding in his orchard on a somewhat extensive scale, and "his intention was to confer with Mr. Carrie, of Matakana, and, if possible, to identify the specimen he found with that of which Mr. Carrie wrote to the Auckland Weekly News a few weeks ago. This brings up a very grave and important question for fruitgrowers' consideration, and must prove •a very difficult) subject to be dealt with under the Garden Pests Acb. Before the Acb is put in operation this and other enemies of the codlin moth require careful study by entomologists wherever the culture of fruit is considered of value, more especially as a national industry.— Correspondent.]
