AUCKLAND STOCK AND SHARE BROKERS REPORT.-Thursday, May 14, 1896.

During the past month the market has shown a much firmer tone, with a general upward tendency. Monoyis plentiful, ana good investments are scarce and difficult to obtain. Banks.—A good enquiry for Nationals, and prices advanced to 31/-. Insurance.—A fair demand for this class of stock. New Zealands have improved In value; business from 68/6 to 74/-. South British not quite so firm J business 50/ and 49/0. Nationals havo sold from 18/■ to 18/4, cum dividend of 9d. per share. Standards havo been in request ab reduced rates; buyers are now offering 15/9. Gas. -This class of stock is very firm, and difficult to obtain ab current rates. Auoklawl old issue have changed hands at £13 to £13/2/0, with an unsatisfied enquiry. For new issue, buyers are offering £7. Thames, 34/-. . .

Shipping.—N.Z. Shipping have sold at £4/2/6, and could still be placed ab tkab figure. Northerns, 6/1 i Devonport Perry, 30/-, with numerous enquiries.

Coals have also been in better request. Taupiri find buyers at 22; Hikurangi, 8/6; Ngungutu, 20/-.

Mining,— market for mining stock has been especially active, with heavy business all round. Prices for most of the leading mines have advanced considerably. Recent battery returns show an increase in the quantity of bullion obtained. Numerous enquiries for good mining properties are being made by the representatives of foreign capitalists. The outlook generally is most encouraging, and there is every reason to believe that investments at currenb rates in mines on the Hauraki Peninsula will prove highly remunerative.
