Mr. C. A. Harris leaves for England by the San Francisco mail steamer to-morrow.

Mr. D. A. Chrisp, late of the Moa and Southern Cross, is now acting as chief officer of tbe Mahinapua. Mr. William Duncan, of the Advances to Settlers Office, left by the Waiotahi yesterday for the East Coast on departmental business. Mr. W. Lambert left Wellington last night, by the Takapuna, to take charge of the Auckland branch of the Mutual Life Association.

Mr. C. A. Given, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at New Plymouth, will succeed Mr. Hanna in the managership of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company. A private letter received at Lyttelton from Shanghai mentions that about a dozen New Zealanders are doing well there in different employe. Mr. E. F. S. Maundrell, who was for over eight years in the Union Company's employment, is now chief officer of the s.e. Ngankin. Mr. E. Stringer, of Cbristcburch, is gecond officer of the Rankin; Messrs. F. Cross and H. Coe, of Cbristcburch, second officers in a Japanese Company; Mr. J. Hinton, of Dunedin, second officer of a C.N. Company's steamer; and Mr. Paton, of Taranaki, second officer in Jardine M. and Company's fleet. Sergeant-major James Shegog, late of the sth Dragoon Guards, a Crimean veteran, „ died lost week .ear Launceston, in bis 85th year. He possessed medals for distinguished conduct in the field, a Crimean medal with clasps for Sebastopol, Inkerman, and Balaelava, and a Turkish medal. He was an eyewitness of the famous charge of this Light Brigade, and gave evidence at the inquiry in regard to Lord Cardigan's conduct on that occasion. Beyond that he showed great valour in the charge made by bis own regiment, in which he was orderly to General Sir Yorke Scarlett, and for which be not only received a medal for distinguished conduct, bub ie also mentioned with honour in volume v. of A. VV. Kinglake's "Invasion of the Crimea."
