Mb. L. D. Nathak will be a passenger to San Francisco by the mail steamer Alameda on Saturday. Captain Knutter, late of the barque Commerzienrath Rodbertus, left for Sydney by the Waihora yesterday en route for Germany. The death is announced of Mr. J. L. Hassell, one of the pioneers of the Oamarn district, where be arrived in 1859. He was the father of Dr. Hassell. Mr. Markham, member of the Brokers' Association, and Mrs. Markham leave for England by the Alameda on Saturday, Mr. Markbam's business being principally in connection with mining matters. Mr. F. J. Dignan, manager of the Marten branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is going away on a holiday for a few weeks, and during his absence hie place at the Bank will be filled by Mr. R. W. Moir. Mr. C. A. Eden borough returned by the Richmond from the Islands yesterday. It will be learned with regret that Mr. Edenboroagh is in very poor health at present. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Mott left in the Waihora for Sydney yesterday, where ho will visit the University Colleges, etc. Mr. Mott was much pleased with his reception aDd the result* of his visit to Auckland. Miss Dugdale, of Wellington, who has just retired from the position of teacher in piano-playing at the Nelson School of Music, has been presented by her pupils with a handsome broooch, as a memento of their two years' association. Mr. Seymour Tborne George has received a cablegram from Sir George Grey, stating thai. Mrs. and Miss George had started on their homeward journey to New Zealand. Ii is evident, therefore, that Sir George intends remaining in England. The many friends of Mr. Walter Brodie, of the Bank of New Zealand, will be pleased to hear of his promotion to the position of teller at the Paeroa branch of the Bank. Mr. Brodie was yesterday the recipient of a case containing two handsome pipes and a silver, match-box from his fellow-officers. Mr. James Wilson, of the Wellington branch of the Union Bank of Australasia, has been ordered to Perth, Western Aus-« tralia, on promotion. Mr. Wilson is a prominent member of the Wellington Football Club, and also well-known in aquatic circles, having occupied a seat in the Star Boating Club's senior four this season. Mr. H. J. Williams, of Wellington, went to Sydney by the Waihora yesterday, to attend the session of the Grand Lodge of Australasia of the American Constitution of Oddfellows, in which he holds the rank of Past Grand Sire, having been the chief officer of the Order in the colonies. At this session Mr. F. Wills, of Wellington, will also be present as Grand Master of New Zealand. Mr. J. F. Logan, of the firm of Macky, Logan, Steen and Company, accompanied by Mrs. and Miss Logan, left for London, Tia Sydney, yesterday, by the s.s.Waibora. In addition to personal friends, several representatives of our local athletic bodies, with which Mr. Logan has for many years past been connected, attended to witness his departure and wish him bon voyage. It is understood that he will remain in England for some years. _ Amongst the passengers by the s.s. Waihora, which left for Sydney yesterday, was Mr. John Cocks, a miner who for the last 20 odd years has been intimately connected with gold mining at the Thames, Te Aroba, and Reefton. He was en route for the Coolgardie goldfields, to join'his relative, Mr. Gribble, who is manager of one of the most important mines in that district. A few Thames friends invited Mr. Cocks to .meet them at the Waverley Hotel, on Tuesday night, Mr. C. A. Cornes presiding, and they gave him a characteristic and cordial send-off, with the best of wishes for bis future welfare.
