[BY telegraph,—own CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Wednesday. The census returns from the Coromandel County places the population of that district at 5053, which is a large increase. The returns from Piako County give that district a population of 2050, which is also an increase.

Wellington, Wednesday. Judge Denniscon. who held a sitting in the Bankruptcy Court, to-day, told one applicant' for discharge that a more elaborate attempt to swindle a particular creditor, he had never seen. The bankrupt bad paid all his creditors except Nelson and Moate, who refused to make a reduction in their account, while the others did. He had also spent £33 in supplies for big family. The application was refused. The Premier received a telegram, tonight, stating that Mr. Ward had " a magnificent meeting" at Hawera, and that a hearty vote of thanks and confidence was carried " almos'j unanimously." The Premier addressod a large meeting at Johnsonville, las'- night. He mentioned that the surplus would be £150,000. At the conclusion, three cheers and a hearty vote of thanks and confidence were accorded him.
Nelson, Wednesday. A lad named Gordon, 17 years, was arrested to-day on the charge of stealing articles valued at £5 13s 6d from his employers, and which it is alleged he sold bo a second-hand dealer.
Westport, Wednesday. Mr. John Hughes, proprietor of the Empire Hotel, and an old resident, died this evening after a short illness. Deceased at different times occupied positions in various local bodies, having been Mayor three times, and county chairman. At the time of death ho occupied a seat in the County Council and on the Harbour Board Thirty-two coal miners from Newcastle arrived to-day under engagement to the Westport Coal Company. The Cardiff Company has chartered a steamer to take 1000»tons coal to Fiji. Ab the first meeting of the new School Committee the lady member made a persistent effort to have two members of the committee unseated on the ground that they are members of the Civil Service, and consequently disqualified. The Chairman ruled thab the matter was one for the Board to deal with, There were some sharp interchanges between the lady and other members.
At Waimangaroa the lady-chairman was assailed by rude remarks from the other ladies amongst the public. TiMARU, Wednesday. The Board of Education today passed a resolution disapproving of the excessive home lessons, and recommending teachers to give as little home work as possible, arithmetic being specially disapproved. Dvn&dis, Wednesday. A aix-roomed house at Wangatui, owned and occupied by Joseph Brown, was destroyed by. fire yesterday. Insurances, £250 in the National. A deputation waited on the Mayor to-day to bring tinder his notice the matter of Sunday concerts, and after discussion the Mayor said it was intended to review the by-law and make provision to meet the difficult*
