At the meeting of the Farmers' Club held last week, the following resolution, proposed by Captain Runciman and seconded by Mr, John Fisher, was unanimously agreed to, "That this club has full confidence in the sugar beet industry, and counsels the guarantors to proofed with preparing the land for the crop," The Chairman (Mr. Gane) said there was not the slightest doubt the farmers would carry out their portion of the contract, and Mr. Wells told the meeting that he had every faith in the industry starting, fcr Mr. Douglas hid stated that there was not the slightest doubt about it; the only trouble being as to whether or uot the maohinery could be got out in time to commence operations this season. Mr. W. A. Graham said that Mr. Lewenberg had gone to America, and thence was to proceed to England in ordJr to facilitate matters, and he would then know the exact position it! July, when he would doubtless cable out to the colony.

Mr, R. Fisher gave credit to the Board for not having to strike a rate for the year 189596, and for their attention to the district roads and moderate expenditure. Mr, Reynolds, the chairman, thought it advisable to strike a rate, and it was resolved to do so of a 4d in tho £1, which could be levied some time in the spring, t£S*ifc was better to hive a rate than an overdraft, and they must have either one or the other.

Grass is looking well, the light frosts experienced as yet not having cut it down, that sown in autumn especially showing an excellent growth. A field of Mr. Fisher's, on the Kihikihi Road, although late sown, has a good growth of grass already upon it.

Whatawhata, Tuesday. There was only a moderate attendance at th? annual meeting of ratepayers of the Newcastle Highway District, Mr. P. Corboy presiding. A most satisfactory statement of receipts and expenditure was presented, which showed that the money had been generally expended over the whole distriot. and much satisfaction was expressed that all land liabilities had no w been cleared off, so that now the annual funds available for road works in future, wag some £55 more than has been the case during the past three years, The following is the balance-sheet as presented & the meeting. A vote of thanks was passed to the officers of the Board for their services duriug the past yew. Kiiiikihi, Tuesday. The Presbyterian Church was well filled at the meeting of the Band of Hope, presided over by the Rev. J. McDonald, The proceedings were opened by the chairman with a i hymn, and after a short prayer the following programme was gone through, which was heartily enjoyed oy those present. Recitations were given by Miss Nina Ash by and Miss Irene Vailc, and dialogues by the Misses M. Anderson and L. Anderson, and Misses Thompson and Hickton. A song by Mr. Howie was much admired, as was also a reci--1 tation by Miss Nellie Dineen. This was followed by a trio by the Misses L. and Carrie Martin, and Mary Howie, and an address by the Rev. Mr. Walker. A number of recitations, dialogues, and au address from Mr. E. Bridgman, brought the proceedings to a close. Te Awamuto, Monday. Mr. C. J. Taylor, agent here for the Bank of New Zealand, left by Monday's train for Auckland en route for England, where he goes for the benefit of his health. A number of his friends went down to the station to see him off, and bid him bon voyage. He will be much misled in Te Awamutu. Bis tempo-, rary successor, Mr. W. VouSturmer, of the Bank of New Zealand at Hamilton, with his family, arrived here on Saturday, and entered on bis duties yesterday.
