THE CENSUS RETURNS FOR AUCKLAND.

THE CITY AND SUBURBS. EDEN AND MANUKAU COUNTIES. A GRATIFYING INCREASE. We are enabled now to give the results of the late census for the city and suburbs and for the Counties Of Eden and Manukau. Although the 1 returns are not yet quite completed, the work has been advanced to such a stage as to exhibit approximately oorreob totals for every sub-district; contained in the district) allotted to the Auckland enumerator. The increase ovpr the County of Eden is gratifying. It occurs In every division of the district except in the Borough of Onehunga. The decrease there is owing no doubt to. the stoppage of the ironwork industry, and consequent) departure of many families to other places. The small decreases in Pukekohe and a few other portions south of Auckland in Manukau jCounty point to the fact that the activity in the goldraining districts, in the timber industry, the gum industry, and the sebtlomont on land, have attracted a considerable number of young men in these farming places to try thoir Hick in othordirections. Altogether the returns exhibit substantial and gratifying increases all round. When the final results are available, giving separate numbers for males and females, houses inhabited, building, and unoccupied, together with a olear accounb of population in electorates, a further review will be made in connection with Mr. King's district. The Auokiand enumerator speaks very highly of the way in which all the subenumerators have completed their important work, and the absence of any complaints respecting them.

Tho Auokland officer finds there are still a few census schedules unaccounted for, and even these few should bo returned by those who may have them, in order that the final summation may be accurate and full. It would appear also that the Auokland enumerator has more population in his district than all others combined in this provincial district.

On tho presenb occasion the census forms hare been much simplified as compared with previous periods, and the RegistrarGeneral is to be congratulated on having made such an improvement.

The accompanying summaries are compiled in a very olear and satisfactory manner, and show at a glance tho advance made during the past fire years in Auckand and its surroundings

COUNTY OF EDEN.

Total for Kden County ~ „ 00,027 Total for Manukau County .. .. 12,447 Grand total 73,874

It would be quite just, to count as suburbs of Auckland the districts of Mount Albert, Ono Tree Hill, Poinb Chevalier, and Mount Roskill, and if wo add these, xr\ have a total of 54,100. Then the boroughs of Devonporb and Birkenhead, and the distrlots of Northcote, Chelsea, and the Lake, in the County of Waitomata, must be considered suburbs of the city, and if these were added we should estimate the population of Auckland at over 58,000. Wellington and suburbs Is returned at 41,745, so that, notwithstanding tho large increase in thab city, we have still here the largest oentro of population In the colony.
