VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

A meeting of ex-members of the Gordon Rifle Volunteer Company, now extinct, was hold last/ night at the Drillshed for the purpose of selecting a team to compete against the volunteer companies of the district for the Gordon Shield. In explanation it may be said that the Gordon Company of Volunteers, which was one of the outcrops of the Russian war scare, had a good record amongst marksmen whet) il< disbanded, and, they also had a considerable fund to credit. This they converted into a Challenge Shield, open for competition to all volunteer companies in the district, but they reserved the right to nominate a team or teams to represent the Gordon Company. At the meeting held at the Drillahed last night, Mr. J. B. Fairs was callod to the chair, and he explained the business of the meeting. A good deal of discussion took place, principally because Captain White and others were now connected with other volunteer companies, which would probably bo competitors. Finally a number of names were submitted as members of the team, and the following were selectedLieutonants J. B. Fairs, J. W. Leigh, 1). Hay, Buchanan, and Volunteer J. L, Leigh, with Volunteer Osborne as emergency man.
