The Gumdiggers' Union Athletic Sr o II Committee met at Dargavillo on th» 11? I January. Mr, W.H. FitzPatrick wasM I chairman, and E. R. Ellis secretary. \ ffi decided that the annual athletic Bathe!" II be held at Manpawhare on Saturn 1 ' i March 14, 1896. .The programme i,7' I most liberal in % province of Auckland' 1 and few excel it in the colony. There i! li £84 10s to be given away in prize-mon,, W The principal events are the Gumdb,i'' ffl Union Cup of £21: First prize, £15 ~S I £4; third, £2. The One-mile Handicap; H £15 First prize, £10; second, £3; third « I The Half-mile, £510s; Quarter-mile, '$ Sj 120-yards Hurdle Race, £4 10a; Two-aji; fi Walk, £4. These events are open to ,||. || comers, and the committee have endtavourdi P to meet all athletes in a very liberal inanoe, I' with regard to nomination fees. All event, f§ are straight-out entries. The Cup and Mil. flare 5s each; the Half-mile, Quarter-milt m and Hurdle Race, 2s 6d each; the Two! M mile Walk, 3s. There is also a district tug. i of-war on the programme, with £5 added II money on to a sweepstake of £2103 a team fa in the event of four teams competing. There II is also £5 for a Brass Band competition, an | £3 for a Bandsman Race. There are in ,j | 22 events on the programme; and, after tt, 1 general satisfaction given last year, there i, 1 reason to expect that this will be the best I day's sport the Wairoa has ever seen.
