THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the University College Council took place yesterday afternoon. Present: Bishop Cowie (in the chair), Rev. W. J. Williams, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. J. Holland), Messrs. Jackson Palmer, Gerald Peacocke, F. E. Baume, and Maclaurin.

Sinclair Scholarship. — A Sinclair Scholarship is to be otTered for competition at the close of the session of 1896, of the value of £50 per annum, tenable for two years. Requisition.— Thomas's requisition for £97 10s was agreed to. Finance.—The report of the Finance Committee was deferred in the absence of Mr. Udy. Leave op Absence.— Brown was granted leave of absence for a week, in order to attend the meeting of the University Senate. School of Music.—Regulations with regard to the new certificates instituted by the Council entitling the holder to rank and be called an Associate of the School of Music of the Auckland University College were agreed to. Taupiri Rates.-Certain of the tonants of Taupiri reserve having failed to pay rates and the College is entitled to recover, it was agreed to warn them that legal proceedings will be taken. The Glasgow Medals. — Professor Sell mitt) recommended that the Glasgow medals be awarded as -follow:— the senior division to J. H. Gittos, and in the junior division to Ida Baker. Resolved that the medals be awarded as recommended, and that the chairman write to the Countess of Glasgow intimating the names of the successful recipients. . Professorial Reports.—The chairman reported that he had had an interview with the chairman of the Professorial Board as to the reports which the Council desired to obtain from the several professors. After the discussion it was agreed to postpone the question till next meeting. Accounts.—Accounts to the amount of £314 15s wero passed for payment. Adjournment.—The Council then adjourned till the 17 th February.
