ATHLETIC SPORTS.

CRICKET.

The weather on Saturday was almost perfection for the continuation of . the Cricket Association Gup matches in the Domain. Mr. R. Yates had all the pitches, and more particularly those oh which the two senior contests were fought out, in a state of almost billiard-table smoothness. The attendance of spectators was somewhat larger than on previous occasions, owing most likely to the coming match with the New South Wales team, and in the Gordon-Parnell game some rather faster cricket than usual was witnessed when the former team went to the wickets for the second innings.

PARNF.LL V. GORDON. This match was resumed on Saturday afternoon. Wright, not having returned from the South, Seager, the other not out batsman, was accompanied to the wicket by Dixon. Kelly and Williams, as before, wero entrusted with the bowling. The first few overs were chiefly noteworthy for theindecision displayed by Dixon, especially when opposed to Williams, who eventually bowled him with a yorker. Sealer showed [good form, compiling 21 before sucoumbing to Kelly. The remaining batsmen failed altogether to negotiate Williams, and the innings closed for 191. At half-past throe Gordon essayed the task of wiping off the deficit of 105, and setting their opponents a few to get to win. As time was limited each batsman . received instructions to hit—a hundred runs an hour being required. That each batsman endeavoured to obey orders the score of 149 at the end of an hour and a-half's play shows. The palm must be awarded to _ Cotterill, who, going in late, played a brilliant innings for 44, including eight boundary hits. Gould and Ball also showed excellent form, whilst Fairburn deserves mention for his useful contribution. Of the bowling it must be said that it proved easier to hit thau to play. Wood's proved the most successful, but Lawson was the most difficult. In getting the 44 runs necessary to win, Parnell lost three wickets. Ohlson and Lawson shaped well for their runs. For Parnell Mills did some brilliant work in the field. On the Gordon side the fielding with few exceptions was very bad, scarcely a ball being cleanly picked up, whilst the throwing was positively dangerous to any other fieldsman save the wioketkeeper.
