HALF-HOLIDAY CONFERENCE.
SELECTION OF REPRESENTATIVES. The appointment of delegates to tho annual Conference under the Shops and Shop Assistants Act which is to be held in January next, came up for consideration at the meetins; of the City Council last night, when the Mayor (Mr. J. J. Holland) moved, "That the day for the Conference he fixed for January 17, 1896, at noon, ami that four members (including the Mayor) be now appointed." The Act provides that the Mayor shall lie ex officio a member. Mr. Holland in moving the motion said ho hoped there would be no discussion. It was a thing necessary to bo done. Mr. Kidd seconded. Mr, iSticlibury remarked that it was well known the Karaiigahapeinemberswerebiassed in favour of Wednesday, and it was not right that tho city should be ruled by them. There should not be two representatives from any one ward. 'Hie following Councillors were then proposed us delegates Messrs. Facrell, Hewson, Warren, Garratt, and Kidd. Mr. Stichbury at once protested against the inclusion of the names of two representatives of the Karangahape Ward, Messrs. Garratt and Warren, and said: "It is not a fair fight; I will not vote at all; it is not right. Mr. lurid desired to withdraw, and stated that his friends would do him a good turn by not voting for him. The first ballot resulted as followsGarratt 12, Farrell 11, Warren 7, Hewson 7, Kidd 2. There being a tie between Messrs. Warren and Hewson, their names were again submitted to the ballot, the result being: Warren 8, Howson 5. Tho Council will therefore be represented by Messrs. Holland (Mayor), Garratt, Farrell, and Warren. It is understood that Messrs. Garratt, Farrell. and Warren favour tlio Wednesday half holiday, though they did nob express themselves to that effect.
