WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
(BY tkleoraph.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Wednesday. Mr. Ward left for tho South today, and will not be back until after tho New Year holidays. It is hit intention ta go for a cruiso with his family in tho schooner Heather Bell. Thoy will visit the most interesting places in Stewart Island.
The Telegraph Department is erecting a copper wire between Wellington and Auckland. It has now reached Waipukurnu, and that portion of the wire is in uso. The route of this copper wire is via Mastorton and Woodville. An extra wire i? also being run from Auckland to Paeron, via Hamilton, Morrinsville, and Te Aroha to make provision for the increased traffic due to the mining activity in the Upper Thames district. The line from Awanul to Capo Maria Van Diemen is approaching completion. The estimated cost of this extension (60 miles) is £2-1-00. The new single core cablo which is to bo laid across Cook Strait was shipped on tho Tcrrannrn to-day. The cable is to be laid next week.
