ECCLESIASTICAL.
Tug consecration of the new church of St. Paul's took place on , November 1, tho ceremony being performed by His Lordship Bishop Cowie, Primate of New Zealand. The completion of the new building had for some time been looked forward to with considerable interest) by the parishioners, who havo for the past several years been placed under considerable difficulties in the matter of Divine worship. The day selected for the consecration of the new building couid not have been more appropriate, as, in addition to being All Saints' Day, ib also followed the annual meeting of th» Diocesan Synod, and enabled clergy from all parts of the district to remain in town and take part in the service. With few exceptions all members of the Synod were present. Many old members of the Church came long distances fca attend tho service, and the gathering was a truly representative one. By half-past ten, the hour fixed for tho servico, the church was crowded, many being unable to obtain admission. The interior of tho church presented a very attractive appearance, and was much admired. Tho architect, Mr. W. H. Skinner, of this city, devoted a considerable amount of time in working out tho details of the plan, and together with the contractor, Mr. McLean, is deserving of the thanks of the parish for the fine building erectod. Initiatory steps are being taken towards the erection of a handsome new church to take the place of the present St. Matthew's Church, Hobson-street. Several local architects are engaged giving their views as to the proposed church. It is intended ultimately to invite designs for the church in both the colonies and London. A premium of £250 is to be given for the two best) designs. , , , A meeting of tho Catholic clergy of the Diocese of Auckland was hold on Hot. 21st, at St. Patrick's Cathedral, under tho presidency of His Grace Archbishop Redwood, for the purposo of designating the names of three priests to be presented to the Bishops of the Province of New Zealand prior to their communicating to the Holy See tho names of the candidates for the office of Coadjutor Bishop, with right of future succession to tho present Bishop of Auckland, the Right Rev. Dr. Luck, 0.5.8., . whose impaired state of health renders such a step desirable. Tho;. result of the clergy's selection is as follows: —Dignissimus, Rev. .t 6. M. Lenihan;: | Dignior, Very Rev. P, O'KeiHy > I?igttUa, Rev. J. J. Hackett. r '4sMi
