The Minister for Education and the Bishop of Salisbury left for Wellington tonight. _.:.. ', Westport, Tuesday. The Westport Coal Company are resuming work, developing the Granity Creek mines. Tenders are invited for three contracts, incline tunnelling, etc., which will employ 70 men for six months. The Harbour Board agreed to place £15,744 to the credit of the public account for the purchase of the Mohikinui Coal Company's branch line. Dunkdin, Tuesday. Mr. J. A. Millar, M.H.R., addressed his constituents at North East Valley to-night, and received a unanimous vote of confidence. The inspector of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals successfully prosecuted nine persons at Clinton to-day fer working horses with open sores, the fines and costs amounting to over £21. The Colonial Treasurer will be entertained at a social gathering on Saturday evening* Invercaroill, Tuesday. An alleged criminal assault on a young girl in the suburbs, under most outrageous circumstances, is reported, and an arrest will probably follow to-morrow. It is said that a murried man smashed in the window with an axe, and threatened to murder the inmates of the rooms, two girls, if they thwarted him. One gob away and gave the alarm.
