SOUTH KENSINGTON ART EXAMINATION.

NEW ZEALAND AWARDS. [By TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Thursday. The following are the results of the South Kensington art examination just received by the Board of Education : — National bronze medal for designs and illustrations of ornament, Florence Broome. National book prize for drawing from life, Mabel Hill. Art master's certificate, Mary E. Richardson. This is the first certificate of the kind obtained by any art student in this colony. The Adelaide School of Art is the only other in Australia where the same certificate has been obtained. It entitles the holder to the appointment as head of an art school, and, if in Great Britain, to obtain payment upon works of school art. Class teachers' certificate : Ethel Baker, Sarah Jollie, Elizabeth Benbow, Mary Newton, Jessie Newton. Works by the" following wore accepted towards competition of art master's certificate ; _ Florence Broome, Kate Lawson, William Rowtree, Mary Kate Richardson ; drawing from models, Alice Perry. Miss Richardson, who has secured the distinction of winning an Art Master's certificate, is a daughter of the Hon. Mr. Richardson, and assistant mistress in the Wellington School of Design. In connection with the list of awards to the Wellington Technical School, the examiners mention that the school would, if in England, be entitled to a grant of £21 upon the works submitted by candidates for competition, only it was notified last year that the standard would be considerably raised, and that no work submitted for third grade certificate under a certain value would be admitted. Under these stringent conditions the success of the local school ie considered very creditable. ■
