COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, Thursday evening. The market on the Stock Exchange is very unsettled, as regards bank shares, with little business doing in them. There has been a general demand for all insurance stock. New Zealand are wanted at 5Ss 6d; holders are asking 60s. South British have been largely dealt in, and have touched 40s 6d: there are numerous buyers at 40s. Nationals are wanted at its 6d, and Standards at 17s. Accidents, buyers 10s; sellers, lis. Auckland Gas have been sold at £10 10s, at which figure they could still be placed. Sales of Gisborne Gas have been reported nt 28s. with an unsatisfied demand. T&upiri Coal are asked for at 153 6d, aud Union Oil at 12s 3d. In miuiug, Alburnias are _ slightly easier ; May Queens aud Moanataiaris are at last quotations. There has been good business in Waihis up to 42s ; small parcels may still be obtained at a slight advance over this figure. There is a steady inquiry for Woodstocks at 3s 9d. Golden Cross have changed hands at 13s 6d. A6d dividend has been declared in the Try Fluke, and shares are wanted at 2s 6d; sellers, 3s. Reiteration of a dull description of business is uncongenial work, but it is impossible to alter facts to square them to wishes. The creeping paralysis sort of commercial disease that traders are all apparently suffering from requires a higher economic treatment than we appear likely to have, although the "Slaughter of the innocents this week iu the killing of vexations and disturbing bills shows some recognition of the force of public opinion which is encouraging. Very little has occurred to lift the week out of one of the most common-place character. There is a growing scarcity of White Rose kerosene; and Gem and other brands are held firmly with the market tendency upwards.

Cable advice has been received of an advancing market in tin plates. This is owing, we understand, to a combination of French and Belgian buyers operating extensively. Many of the mines i n Cornwall have ceased giving an output in the faco of a lone run of low prices. This, with a likelihood of an improved American demand, now that the Tariff Bill is passed, is considered the basis of the combination calculations. The failure of the crop of canary seed In Turkey and Spain has made a smart rise in price, but locally the sales aro very small. A sale ol 1000 casks cement to arrive is reported. Stocks of fine salt are rapidly lessening, and the arrival of tho Lake Erie, due next month, will probably be opportune. Authentic reports of heavy rains in the currant-growing districts of Greecej with an expeoted short crop in consequence, is stiffening the currant market. We are dubious of all Greek reports, but remember the old fable of the wolf. Some day it will happen that what is the exact truth will be disregarded because of the many false cries of disaster. The London fruit houses are no doubt represented in the Levant, and the advance, it is fair to assume, is ou explicit information.

The season's enquiry for woolpacks has commenced.

Cheese is in very short supply, and what is obtainable is principally in heavy weights. Bacon : We fear the same system operates in this as in binder twine, viz., a readiness to accept prices outside of New Zealand that is not followed within the colony. The London reports of the sale of sizeable New Zealand bacon is at 52s per cwt., but Canterbury carers quote 56s to 58s within the colony. This appears a little contradictory, especially as there is some boast about securing 52a in Loudon against the American cure. Keg farmers' butter is scarce, and even factory put up is not readily obtainable. Oats continue dull, at unaltered rates. Maize has been sold at Is lljd. There is only a moderate supply. Potatoes keep about the same as last week. Rough weather is Tasmania is curtailing shipments to Sydney, and there is a belief in Many sanguine minds of a recovery in prices, but although hope tells a flattering tale many Southern holders are preferring to sell a rapidly-decaying article at this season. Milling wheat : The London and American markets continue quiet, and the dullness is not only reflected in our Southern and local markets, but greatly intensified by the uncertain feeling that prevails in commercial circles, that our Government may any day double the duty on imported wheat and flour. Seed wheat is still selling freely. Fowl wheat is in fair demand. Bran and sharps are very dull of sale. Flour : The market is quiet. In the local produce market eggs continue to come to hand in quantities far greater than the local and export trade can dispose of, with the result of a fall in price. The prices are as follow Beat dairy fresh butter, lOd per lb; second quality, 7d; and third quality, 6d per lb wholesale. Eggs are 5d per dozen wholesale, and 7d per dozen retail.

KAURI GUM MARKET.

The following is the report of the gum market and ruling quotations, as furnished to us by the committee of gum merchants :— Poor ordinary £24 Fair ordinary £26 Good ordinary £34 East Coast £53 to £55

Parcels of superior ordinary command higher prices according to quality and degree of cleaning. Supplies from Ist inst. to date, 343 tons, wo alteration in the market, which remains very inactive.

New Zealand Investment and Loan Company shares, £4. A portion of the factory butter in store sold at 83a ; merchants are holding for 90s. . At the wool sales the Owhaoko brand brought 13Jd.
