The committee's report spoke favourably of the general management of the school, and the results of the examinations, notwithstanding changes in the teaching staff, and remarked it was a matter for congratulation that one of the pupils, Lizzie Empeu, who competed for the scholarship examination, was within four marks of obtaining it, aud was offered free tuition for three years at the Grammar School. The committee last year planted some trees in front of the playground, but they had not done so well as they had hoped. The school library was in a flourishingcondition. MOUNT EDEN.

The annual meeting of householders was held in the schoolhouse on Monday evening. The attendance was only moderate. Mr. Wtn. Gray presided. The report of the outgoing committee referred to the satisfactory state of the school, the increase in the number of scholars, and the fact that the average daily attendance closely approaches 500, necessitating the consideration of further accommodation in the building. The teaching staff consists of headmaster, five assistant teachers, four pupil teachers, and one probationer. Reference was also made to the needs of a school in the Edendale district. During the year, with the assistance of a grant from the Board, the playground had been greatly imuroved, but the committee regretted it was still far from what it should be, considering the size and importance of the school. The balance-sheet disclosed total receipts, including special grants for play ground, £175 03 3d, and disbursements, £148 15s 8d ; leaving credit balance, £26 4s 7d. The report was adopted. Resolutions sympathising with the Edendale residents in the desire for a school, and also deprecating the suggestion to exclude history from the State schools, were carried. The following gentlemen were elected to the new. committee :— Messrs. G. A. Buttle, W. H. Cooper, Wm. Cole, Win. Eady, Wm. Gnnson, S. Gray, Wm. Gray, E. S. Medley, and P. McNab. A vote of thanks to the outgoing committee and to the chairman for presiding, closed the proceedings. At a meeting of the new committee held immediately alter the conclusion of the public business, Mr. G. A. Buttle was re-elected chairman of committee, and Mr. E. S. Medley secretary and treasurer.

PAPAKURA. The annual meeting of householders of the Papakura school district was held in the schoolroom on the 23rd April. Mr. 0. VVallis was called to the chair, and Mr. Gerrard, as secretary, read the report of the committee, who showed that during the year there has been a change in the teaching staff, Miss H. Kissling having been promoted to a school in Auckland, and her place was supplied, by request of the committee, by Miss Hflfcn Walter. The inspector's report was considered satisfactory. The head teacher's report stated that 31 children had either left the district or ceased to attend school, whilst 43 fresh children had been admitted during the same period. The present number was 115, or an increase of 12 upon last year. The school premises were in good repair, both teacher s residence and school have been recently painted at a cost of over £20. The treasurer's report showed that the receipts for the year ending 31st March, 1894, amounted to £36 9s Bd, inclusive of balance of £16 9s 8d at the beginning of the year. The expenditure had been £15 6d,leavingabalance of £21 7s 2d in the bank and in hand for the new committee to deal with. The reports were adopted unanimously, and a vote of thanks was specially given to the secretary. The following having been duly nominated as members of the new committee, and being the required number, were declared duly elected without any voting, or use of the ballot-box, viz., the Rev. N. D., Boyes, T. Gerrard, Rev. T. Norrie, Oswald Schultze, VV Walters, D. Wilson, J. B. Young. At the close of the meeting the newly-elected committee met, when the Rev. '£. Norrie was re-elected chairman, and Mr. T. Gerrard secretary and treasurer.TOwn Correspondent.] PAPATOETOE.

The statutory meeting of householders was held in the schoolroom, and was not numerously attended. The Rev. D. J. Steele was voted" to the chair. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The names of persons nominated having been read the chairman asked if any householder had any other person to nominate, and there being no response he declared Messrs. Bell, Bailey, Carruth, Gill, Wade, Watson, and VVylhe, who had been regularly nominated, duly elected as the committee for the ensuing year. A deputation from the local temperance body presented a request that the committee would cause Dr. Richardson's Temperance Lessons to be introduced and taught with the laws of health lessons. It was also requested that the new committee should represent to the Board the desirability of appointing a teacher of singing and harmony, and several minor matters were discussed. , A vote of thanks to the outgoing committee, also a similar unanimous vote to the ; chairman, concluded the proceedings. At the meeting of the committee Mr. Wade was re-elected chairman and treasurer, Mr. Watson secretary, and the times of meeting fixed for the second Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. The report showed that during the year the buildings and premises had been kept in good repair, and the committee had decided to enclose a portion of the playground for the horses of the pupils, so an to reduce a.ny further chance of accident from this cause. The epidemic of both measles and mumps, which had been prevalent in this district, caused so great a falling off in the attendance that it was deemed advisable to close the school for three weeks, so as to prevent, as much as possible, the spread of these complaints, and which had materially affected the school's position in the annual examinations. The annual school picnic was held at theKaraka this year, the funds being provided from the proceeds of a concert, the success of it being mainly attributable to the exertions of the head teacher. Prizes had been obtained for the encouragement of those pupils who, in the opinion of the head-teacher, had by their diligence and industry deserved them, and as an incentive to others to persevere so as to obtain them at a future time. These will be distributed by the newly-arranged committee at an early date. At the last standard examination the per centage of passes was 527, which may be taken as fairly satisfactory. The annual financial sfiutement showed a balance of £23 18s to the credit of the new committee, and which is at the Otahuhn branch of the Bank of New Zealand.

~,i EPSOM. .■:•.■ There was - a moderate ■ attendance at the annual meeting of householders of the Epsom district on Monday night. The annual report congratulated the householders on the continued progress of the school. The examination for standards was highly satisfactory, although the results were interfered with by the measles epidemic. The inspector's report was most complimentary to the teachers. The average attendance was 120, the roll average being 142. The report was adopted, and the following gentlemen were elected members of the committee: —Messrs. S. Hesketh, J. Kewland, Clarke, A. Worrall, S. Andrew, W. Brown, and J. W. Burton. Mr. S. Hesketh was elected chairman of the committee. OTAHUHU. The annual meeting of the householders of the Utahuhu School District was held on Monday evening in the Public Hall. Mr. Luke was elected chairman. There was a very large attendance of householders, and freaifc interest was taken in the proceedings. Ir. James Willis, secretary to. the School Committee, read thn annual report, in which reference was made to the removal of Mr. Armstroug to Devonport and Miss Gillespie to Pukete, and the appointment of Mr. T. Wilson and Miss Robb. It was stated that the average attendance had increased, and it was believed that the next year's average would exceed 200. Discussion arose as to school discipline and corporal punishment in the school. The report was adopted by the meeting. The following gentlemen were elected members of the School Committee for the ensuing year—Messrs. James Willis, Robert Dick, Cyprian Rowe, Owen C. Mc«ee, T. Whiteley, William Dixon, and Dr. Rowley. At a meeting of the committee held immediately after the election, Mr. Robert Dick was elected chairman and Mr. James Willis secretary and treasurer.— Correspondent.] CAMBRIDGE. The annual meeting of householders for the election of a school committee was held on Monday. Mr. Bond, Mayor, was voted to the chair. Mr. Sargent, chairman of the out-going committee read the report and balance-sheet. The report stated that the average attendance was 156*4, a slight increase. Mr. Goodwin had paid a surprise visit recently, and reported • the school highly satisfactory in every respect. He found the order, discipline, and tone of the school, and the manners and general behaviour of the scholars, all very good. The committee expressed themselves as much in favour of the present system of supplying school stationery. They also reported improvements to the school grounds and supply of filters for the use of the school, and expressed pleasure in endorsing Inspector Goodwin's report as to the efficiency of the school. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £1816s lid. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Messrs. Brooks, Sargent, Wells, Dickinson, Bach, Hally, and Boyce were proposed as the committee for the ensuing year, and being the number required were declared duly elected. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Sargent for his ' able and impartial conduct of the duties of chairman of committee was carried by acclamation. At a subsequent meeting of the new committee Mr. Sargent was re-elected chairman, and it was decided to hold the meetings at the Borough Council offices on the third Tuesday in each month.—[Own Corresspondent]

MANGERE. There was a fair attendance of householders at the meeting for the election of School Committee on Monday evening. Captain D. H. McKenzie was voted to the chair. The chairman of committee read the balancesheet and report of proceedings for the year ending 31st March. The balance-sheet showed receipts to be £43 10a lid, and expenditure £40 17s 7d, leaving a balance in hand of £2 13s 4d. The report showed that there was an increased attendance at both schools in the district. There was a great disproportion between the roll number and the average attendance for the June and September quarters of last year. This was caused by the epidemics— measles and influenza. The following are the quarterly returns for the Mangere .'School 3oth June, 1893, roll number 70, average 49: 30th September, roll number 67. average 508 ; 31st December, roll number 74, average 617; 31st March, 1894, roll number 70, average 63*7. In consequence of the increased attendance, an additional teacher had been attached to the staff, Miss Vellenoweth having been appointed at the beginning of the school year. Miss Bower had charge of Standards I. and 11. and the Primers. It was pleasing to note that Mr. Mellsop reported favourably of his assistants, and that the inspector, Mr. Dickenson, reported highly of the work done in the school. The percentage of passes in both of the schools was good, and would certainly have been much higher but for the interruption of school work by measles and influenza. A considerable amount of improvements and repairs had been effected at the school. The back portion of the school ground had been cleared ot the furze that * disfigured it, and has been planted with forest trees, and recently fenced. The' boys urinal had been renovated and improved at considerable cost, some drains had also been taken up and relaid. The cost of these repairs fell on the ordinary school fund, the Board refusing to make any grant in aid. At the Mangere Bridge School, the attendance was increasing year by year, having now a roll number of 845, and an average of 72.16. Mrs. Woodward's report of her pupil teachers, Misses Dunn and Brown, were of a very satisfactory character. The school had obtained excellent inspectors' reports, and Mr. Dickenson closed his examination report with the remark that " The result of the examination is creditable to the teachers." (Report read.) This school being now thoroughly established, should be provided with a teacher's house. During the year the committee requested the Board of Education to build a house, but the application was declined. The head teacher of the Bridge school received 20 per cent, less salary than a man would receive for the same work, and also had to pay house rent out of her stipend.. Mr. and Mrs. Mellsop were deserving of the warmest thanks of the district for raising the necessary funds for the children's Christmas picnic. On that occasion prizes to the amount of £9 were given, and the whole affair cost a little over £17. On the motion of Mr. Kirkbride, the report and balance-sheet were adopted. Messrs. W. P. Massey, M.H.R., and Andrews weru appointed scrutineers. Nine candidates were nominated, and on a ballot being taken the following tzeutlemen were declared elected :— Messrs. Washer, Kirkbride, Scott, Pegler, Fisher, Mclntyre, and Captain McKenzie. Mr. Massey, M.H.R., moved, and it was carried unanimously, " That it be an instruction to the incoming committee to urge upon the Board of Education the desirability of erecting a teacher's house at Mangere Bridge school. On the motion of Mr. Westney, a vote of thanks to the outgoing committee and to the teachers, was carried by acclamamation. At the meeting of the committee immediately afterwards, Mr. M. M. Kirkbride was reelected ohairman, and Mr. C. Washer treasurer.— Correspondent.]
