ATHLETIC SPORTS.

CRICKET. VICTORIA VALLEY V. MANGONOT. THE Victoria Valley team journeyed to Mangonui on Saturday, 14th, and played a match against a team representing the Mangonui Club. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the match could not be started before two o'clock, and in consequence the game was unfinished, the Victoria Valley team winning by 51 runs on the first innings. The bowling of the local team was very weak, and the visitors had very little trouble in putting together a good score. Appended are the scores :— Victoria Valley.—First innings : A. E. Woodside. — On Saturday, the 7th, the Woodside Cricket Club played Papakura Valley, in Mr. T. Clow's paddock. Time would only allow of a one innings match, which our boys won, the scores being Valley 18, and Woodside 51. Messrs. Semadeni and Benge bowled splendidly for the local team, and W. O Hara topped the scores in batting. It is only fair to state that Valley played two men short.—[A Correspondent.]

LAWN TENNIS. Yesterday afternoon, on the Auckland lawn, on of the Association inter-club matches was played off, the players being Misses Home and L. Ring, of the Auckland Club, and Misses Davy and Pownall, of the Parnell Club. The Auckland ladies had somewhat the best of it in the earlier part of the first set, but their opponents came up strongly, and made it 5—4, but failed to score the sixth game, and five all was called. From this point the interest was well-sustained till the end of the set, which was finally won by Parnell: 10-8. Notwithstanding the length of the first set, the ladies immediately started on the second, which was as stoutly-contested as the first, and finally fell to Auckland, the score being : 7—5. Having won a set each, and «fie same number of games, it was thought <hat the final set would be equally close, but a slight shower of rain rapidly altered the condition of the ground and the weight of the balls, and the Auckland pair won th« third set somewhat easily : 6—l. The play throughout was distinctly good, hard services and fast returns being the order of the day. Miss Davy's overhand service won her a good many points, and Miss Pownall's cross court drives scored time after time, but she left a good deal too much work for her partner, and missed a good many strokes by failing to come up at the proper time. Miss Home, on the contrary, was too much inclined to come up to the net when there was no necessity for doing so, her partner, Miss Ring, being always able to return anything which she could reach at the net. It is to be regretted that there were so few spectators to witness such an interesting match. Auckland and Parnell have each won a match with their ladies. They have four more matches to play against each other, which will come off on Saturday next. This will conclude the inter-club matches for the season.

As the Eden and Epsom Club have not played out all their matches against the other clubs it will bo somewhat difficult to place th*; various clubs. Parnell and Auckland will probably be the two clubs with the largest number of wins, though both scored badly against Eden and Epsom.
