A correspondent of an English horticultural journal thus expatiates on the evergreen oak (Quercus ibex):—With its lovely dark green glossy foliage and spreading branches it makes an invaluable sheltertree for small gardens where dwellings are crowded together. It is* easily propagated, and frequently reproduces itself from the acorns, which in 1893 were particularly fine. There are trees in our garden about 40ft high. The foliage we find very useful for winter decoration, and for associating with cub flowers. Avenues of this species form walks of much beauty, affording plenty of shelter from the winds in the winter, and shade from the sun in the summer. lb likes a stiffish loam. -
