At the Dominion Experimental Farm, Ottawa, some rather curious experiments have recently been made with a view to discovering the temperaments of different breeds of fowls and their adaptability for confinement. With this end in view a series of sheds were erected, each Bfb by sft, and in these breeding pens of white Leghorns, Minorcas, Andalusians, Plymouth Rocks, Wyandottes, Houdans, Black Hambu rgs, Langshans, Buff Cochins, Redcaps, Coloured Dorkings, and Golden Polands were shut up. The floors were originally covered with straw, bub this was soon changed for gravel, and the condition of the birds at once improved. The first breed to develop any vice were the Minorcas, which laid well for two months, and then commenced feather eating. The next to develop . this habit were the Andalusians, which were succeeded by the Hamburgs, Wyandottes, and Redcaps, when it was determined to change the treatment of the birds, with a view to curing them of the propensity they had acquired. The confinement was then pub a stop to, and on the birds being given their freedom they abandoned the habit, which they regained when being once more retained in the pens. This is a remarkable statement, as the reformation of a feather eater is Usually no easy matter. The official report adds thab of all the breeds the Leghorns—one cockerel and seven pullets—did by far the best, as they laid well all through the experiment, sometimes providing six eggs a day, and developed no vice or symptoms of ill-health whatsoever.
