At 12.30 o'clock yesterday the Union 8.8. Company's steamer Australia, Captain John Gibb, arrived from Wellington, Napier, and the East Coast; with a cargo of wool, etc. Mr. E. R. Stock, the purser, reports Left Wellington at 2 p.m. on the 4th inak.Napier on the sth, and Giaborne on the 6th. Worked Tokomaru, Waipiro, and Tuparoa that day, anchoring for the night at the latter place. Shipped wool and passengers at daylight the next day at Awanui. and Bailed at 8 a.m. Rounded the East Cape at 9 &.m., called at Oreti&nd Raukokore, finally leaving at 3 30 p.m. Had White Island abeam at 7.30 p.m., passed through the Hole in the Wall at 4.15 a.in. next day and arrived as above. The Union, S.S. Company's'steamer, Aua- , walla, which arrived from the East Coast, yesterday, reports ' passing the schooner, A wane i. and another fore-and-aft schooner off the Bast Cape, bound South. Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co., the local agents, are advised . that the fine new steamer, Gothic, of the Shaw-Savill, and Albion Company's line, left London, for , Wellington and Lyttelfcon, on December 30. ' The departure of the s.s. Moa for the East Coast has been postponed until to-morrow night at eight o'clock. i -On Friday next the Union S.S. Company's steamer, Ohau, is due at this port from Tira&ru with a cargo of grain. ' f The barquentine Waitemata berthed at the Railway Wharf yesterday, to discharge her cargo of Newcastle coal. The barquew Northern Chief, Devonport, and Acacia, have been chartered by Mr. J. J. Craig to load ooal at Newcastle for this port. . The. Union S.S. A number of projects have been submitted to the Ministry of Marine, and these, as well as the demands for the concession of the service, have been considered and referred to the Council of State. The first question decided by that body will be whether the service should be organised by the Government or conceded to a company. ■ . The Templemore, a large screw-steamer, has been launched by Messrs. Harland and Wolff, Belfast. The vessel, of which Messrs. William Johnston and Co., Limited, of Liverpool, are the owners, and whioh is intended _ for the North Atlantic trade, is built to the highest class of Lloyd's, as well as the British Corporation Register, and will have a grosa tonnage of 6,100. An awning deck fore and aft will be fitted for cattle, which will also be carried on the after part of she upper deck. The electric light will be fitted throughout the vessel. The triple-' expansion engines for the ship, which will have an indicated horse-power of 3,500, have also been constructed by the builders. |j V, SHIPS LOST AT SEA. , 1 • The annual low of ships at sea, says the Age of Steel, in spite of improved methods i in . ship, building and the higher rate of i Security that follows, is more appalling than Is generally supposed. The annual amount of tonnage turned out of the shipyards of maritime nations makes a huge total, and would probably be sooner or later out of business were it not for the accidents and disasters that are daily making driftwood of sailing vessels and scrap iron of steamer*;. The losses in 1892, as tabulated by Lloyds and recently published in London, show that during last year the gross tonnage of steamships alone lost aggregate '257,048 tons. . This tonnage does not include Ships of less than , 100 tons. There were 215 steam vessels of all nationalities that by one form of disaster or another went off the list. Of these the United Kingdom supplied 105, having a gross tonnage of 144,746 tons, representing 1.69 per cent, of the total steam tonnage owned by Great Britain. Four British vessels were destroyed by fire, ten American, and four others. England lost 13 steamships by collision, Germany 6, France 4, and other countriesß. Under the heading " wrecked," 103 vessels are tabulated, England losing 64. France 8, Central and South America 6, and the United Stater. 4. Of sailing ships the mortuary record shows a loss of 783 vessels of over 100' tons each, the total tonnage being 368,176. In many cases it is possible that di taster might have been avoided, inasmuch mi the science of navigation and the construction of ships is at a higher point of intelligence and efficiency than at any previous time. It may be that future progress in these directions will considerably lessen the hazards of our marine. It may be reasonably assumed that it will, but the risks to life and property at sea, however minimised, will always be a serious factor with the merchant, the under- i writer, and the seaman.
