BOROUGH COUNCILS.

PAR.NELL.

An ordinary meeting of the Parnetl Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. McCabe), Messrs. J. Thornes, A. Wright, E. Withy, N. Pollard, Briggs, Page, Whitley, Gilmour.

Defective Drain.—Mr. J. , Munds comSlainedthab a drain situated in Hobson lav Road discharges itself on his property and does considerable damage,: And irequested the Council to take steps to remedy the evil The matter was referred to the Streets Committee. , >

Complaint.—Mr. M. Casey replied to the letter of the Council, complaining ,of the manner in which the nightsoil contract was' carried , out. He regretted that cause for comprint had arisen, and trusted that »here would be no further reason to complain. He asked that in future all complaints should be made in writing and forwarded to him for explanation. - Export.—The Streets Committee reputed having inspected the various Public Halls in the district. The Parnell Hall required sundry repairs both inside and out to make it safe. The condition .of St. Bonaventura, Hall was r all that could be desired. Regarding the Oddfellows' Hall the committee did not see any necessity for any alterations in the building. Mr. W. P. Duncan's application for tarring and sanding ; was recommended to be done. The committee strongly recommended that, the barbed wire on the outside of the posts of Mrs. Ireland's fence in Gladstone Road be shifted on to the inside of the posts in order to remove the risk of accidents to pedestrians, the same to apply to all other fences in the borough. The matter of the Eublic halls was referred to the Finance and egal Committee to report as to the powers of the Council.

Broken Fence.—The Foreman of Works reported that the fence across Bridgewaber Road had again been broken down, And horses ridden down the path. A great deal of damage was being done by horses beiing ridden and driven on the footpaths in the back streets. Ib was resolved to permanently fence in the road, leaving room for pedestrian traffic, and withdrawing all permits allowing cattle inside. Inspector of Nuisances.—The Inspector of Nuisances reported that he had regularly visited the slaughterhouses, and found them clean. . He referred bo the complaint about, the nightsoil contract, and thought that in a number of instances the people who complained were to blame. He asked the Council to go thoroughly into the matter before the next contract was let. Since his appointment), there were about 300 houses extra having the nightsoil removed. There was an open drain at the rear of St. Stephen's Avenue whioh was a nuisance. The report was adopted, with the exception of the latter clause, which was. referred to the Streets Committee. Claim.—Mr. Friend wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council's decision re his claim. 1 Mr. Thomas Cotter, acting for Mr. Friend, also wrote informing the Council that unless the sum of £4 10s be paid forthwith proceedings would be taken. A reply was ordered to be ' sent stating that the Council adhered bo its previous decision. Doo Registration.—lb was resolved to fix the dog tax at 5s for the year, and that applications be called for the position of collector. Next Meeting.—'The Council resolved to hold its next meeting on the 22nd instant NEWTON. The ordinary meeting of the 'Newton Borough Council was held last night. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. English), and Messrs. Shackelford, Porter, Holden, Webloy, Davenport, and Bouskill.' Mr. Bouskill. took his seat for the first time, and was called upon before doing so to make the usual declaration. The business was purely of a routine and unimportant character, the sitting nob extending over a quarter of an hour. Accounts to the amount of £67 were passed »for payment. •: > : • > DEYONPORT.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Davonporb Borough Council was held last evening," when there were present: Mr. Alison (Mayor), Messrs M. Niccol,o. Mays, R. H. Duder, R. ; Wynyard, •F. J. Hammond, G. Lankham, ana W. Avenell. Finance.The sum of £715 2a 6d was paid on account of the waterworks loan trust account.

Waterworks Contract. —The Council decided to refund the sum of £25 of the £50 deposit of Mr. Malcolm, one of the contractors, who had declined to go on with the work, Mr. Hammond being the only dissentient. Mr. H. Metcalfe wrote enclosing certificate for £154, on account of material, ex Mamara. He also stated thab the Margaret Galbiraibh had nob finished discharging and he would therefore let the invoice (£4794) of her pipes stand until nexb meeting. Mr. Hammond drew the attention of the Council to the fact that the laying of the water pipes would cub up their roads to a considerable extent, and wonld therefore necessitate a considerable outlay in metal, etc. He thought thab the Foreman of Works should furnish a report on the present condition of the roads. The matter was left in the hands of the Foreman of Works.

Refund of Deposit.—Mr. W. Pardons wrote asking the Council for the refund of his deposit. The Council decided to grant the request. - :
