DEEP LEVEL MINING AT THE THAMES.
[BY telegraph.— own CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. The necessity that, exists' for immediate action being taken ■ in . testing the deep levels of the Thames is beyond question if its prestige as a gold field is to be main' tained, "especially in view, of the fact that: operations at present are being mainly confined to the upper levels, whicha»a matter of course are rapidly becoming exhausted. This being so it will ,readily be seen that unless ' prornpb measures ' are 1 taken to' develop the lower levels the mining industry will, at no far .distant date,, suffer keenly from the lethargy and dilatoriness that are now being shown in the matter. Letters upon this impoitanb subject from the pen of Mr. R. McDonald Scott, of Auckland, appear in both the local papers to-day, in ■ which he s strongly urges the people to activity, and to act as one man in furtherance of this great project. The Advertiser, in a leading article upon the subjeot, nays : - "The gravity of the question demands that personal interests, however conflicting, should give way for the common welfare, and' that as our esteemod correspondent, Mr. R. McDonald Scott,' points ouV we • should ' all unite in- pushing forward the scheme, and not rest , until it is satisfactorily accom-j plished. " Though the difficulties to be over ; come are no doubt serious they/ave nob insurmountable, and if we persistently advocate the deep level scheme, there should bo no fatal renson why l it should iy»b be Successfully developed in course of time."
