WAIROA ATHLETIC SPORTS.

The Wairoa athletic i ports were held on the Ist January on the Wairoa racecourse, a beautiful paddock, the property of Mr. A. McNicol. There were over 500 people on the ground, including a. number of yachtsmen from Auckland, and visitors from the surrounding districts. The following were the committee and judges, viz.Messrs. John Colunhoun (secretary), S. Shaw (treasurer), M. Kelly, G. Atkins, R. Jones, T. L. Smith, and A. Shaw ; judges, Messrs. C. W. Stephens, James Henderson, and H. Walsh. There were over 40 events on the programme, and the committee and judges deserve great credit for the manner in which everything was gone through to the satisfaction of all concerned. There was no admittance fee charged at the gates, and the committee provided a free lunch to everyone that liked to partake. The committee gave a dance in the Wairoa Public Hall in the evening after the sports, at which there was a good attendance. The dance music was provided by Mr. Eugene Hulse (violin), and Mr. Meredith (piano). Messrs. T. P. Fraser and W. C. Rhodes acted as M.C.'s to the satisfaction of the dancers. Refreshments were provided ad lib. during the evening. ; Appended are the events competed for as far. as I could ascertain them :— High Jump (haudicap): D. Shaw, 15s, 1; McGuiness, 2; L. Wallis, 3.
