LAWN TENNIS.

The West End Lawn Tennis Club have played off a considerable number of their handicap singles and doubles. Great interest has been taken in these, contests, the entries having been unusually numerous. The following are the results of matches played up to date:— .

Gents' Handicap Singles. —T. Wells (receives 30) defeated A. Foster (owes 15), 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. A. Goldie (owes f 30) defeated H. Gentles (scratch). 6—2,6—4. A. Hatton (scratch) defeated A. Paterson (receives 15), 6—2,6-3. A. G. Cooke (owes i 30) defeated W, Haven (scratch), 7—5, 6—4. J. Paterson (owes 30) defeated C. H. Jones (receives 15), 6—2, 6-4. H. Cooke (receives 15) defeated W. H. Burton (receives £ 15), 7—5, 6—o, The match between Haven and Cooke was a well-contested one, the former at times seeming to have a very good chance of winning, and nearly all the games ' ran into deuce before either side annexed them. In the contest between Cooke and Burton, the play was very uninteresting. The latter did not play up to his usual form, playing an unaccountably weak game. Gknts'Doubles.—Gentles and Foster (owe h 15) defeated Daiton and Burton (receive \ 15),6—1,6—3. Littler and Burton (receive 30), defeated Messrs. Goldie and Hatton (owe 30), 10-8, 6—3. Cooke and Paterson (owe 30) defeated Gentles and Foster (owe * 15), 0-6,6-2, 6-1. Ladies' Doubles.Only one of the matches in this division has as yet been played. This was a very interesting and sharply-contested match, in which some very good play was shown. Misses Caldwell and Russell (owe i 15) defeated Miss F. Billington and Mrs. Gentles (owe 15), 6—3, 5—6,6—5.
