The seventeenth volume of the General Stud Book (British) has lately been issued. Since the last publication of this work, four years since, there had been a large increase in the number of thoroughbreds. It appears that there are now some 1400 breeders of blood stock. Very noteworthy is the increase in the number of mares. While in 1889 there were 3979 mares accounted for, in 1890 the number wan 4081, and 1891 it was 4498. Last year the number was 4930, the largest on record; and the increase from two years before was a remarkable one. Between 1890 and 1892, 892 more brood mares appeared in tbe list. The exportation of the thoroughbred continues to increase, sixty-two pages of the new volume being devoted to the register of " Horses sent abroad," as againsb fortynine in the sixteenth volame. There had been a falling off in the number sent to South America, but' the United States had taken three times as many animals as they did in the preceding four years, the mares amongst the purchases far outnumbering the horses. Australia had taken a few more, though she had nob bought extensively ; bub Belguim had bought largely, her purchases amounting to four times as many as they did between 1885-87- The volume of trade with France had been greater, the increase in the number of mares sold being very marked ; bub in tho German trade there was 8 slight falling off. With other countries the trade had remained stationary.
