FAIR PLAY FOR THE LADIES. .

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I congratulate the ladies in their effort in obtaining <!qual electoral rights and privileges, as evidenced by decisions of both Houses of our Parliament. Some unprincipled men are putting in motion a piece of machinery in the form of a petition to the Governor to veto the verdict arrived at by Parliament, but the Governor in the exercise of his prerogative, will easily perceive the futility of such a lame and unprincipled attempt to interfere with, or to instruct him on so important a matter, when he will be called upon to give vice-Regal authority to a measure that our Parliament has declared shall become law. The Government, judging by the half-hearted support given by them to the clause that gives the vote to women, were in full expectation that the measure would be defeated in the Council, but to their utter dismay the Council has given effect to a measure that now only awaits the Governor's signature to become law. The Government may think that the electors can be hoodwinked or have dust thrown in their eyes at the coming elections. Unprincipled promises and petty lucre will be in full force to obtain seats in the House of Representatives for personal gain and benefit, instead of the good and well-being of the colony generally. The reform of giving the vote to women will, I trust and believe, purify the political atmosphere, and no longer will knaves be privileged to make laws tor the Government of this beautiful colony.—l am, etc., Henry Connop. Victoria-street West, September 12.
