NARROW ESCAPE OF STOWAWAYS.

[BY. telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Thursday. Shortly after the steamer Wakatipu left the wharf for Sydney this afternoon, search revealed two or three stowaways on board. It was decided to send the men ashore, and a boat was got in readiness, but in lowering it from the davits something went wrong with the apparatus, and the occupants were shot into the water. Fortunately the Government launch Ellen Ballance was near at hand, and she picked up the men, none the worse for their ducking, and brought them ashore. The accident caused some little excitement among the passengers. . . . \

The Registrar of Electors for Auckland (Mr. James Halyday) has just been appointed Returning Officer for the city also.
