The American burquentine Abiel Abbot, Captain John H. looker, arrived in harbour yesterday morning from New York, via Wellington, with a part cargo of general merchandise, The matter reports sailing from New York on March 13, and had a good run of 23 days to 3deg. >■"., thence light airs and .•alms for 12 days, whenjkleg. S. was reached. A continuance of light and moderate southeast winds then prevailed to 'Jodeg. .S., afterwards followed by north and north-east and light bulling winds till passing the meridian of the Cape on May 10. No westerly winds were met with across the Indian Ocean. The Snares were sighted on July 2, and light airs _ and calms, followed by light easterly winds, continued until arrival at Wellington on July 1). Discharged a quantity of general merchandise, and sailed for Auckland on July 20. Moderate north-west and southerly winds lasted until making the East Cane on the 29th, when a heavy northeast gale and thick rainy weather was encountered, which veered round to the westward, and blowing hard, continuing until the 31st, when a light breeze from the eastward sprang up, gradually increasing to a gale from the north-east, accompanied with thick, rainy weather, the vessel anchoring off Rangitoto reef on the right of the 2nd lust., and coining up harbour yesterday morning and berthing at the Queen-street wharf. On completion of discharge the Abiel Abbot loads up for New York with kauri gum and llax for Messrs. Arnold, Cheney, and Co. The ketch Agnes Martin has arrived from Raratonga with a cargo of copra. Captain Donald reports sailing on the evening of July 15, and had moderate weather until passing Sunday Island, since which a continuance of heavy weather has prevailed to arrival. During the absence of the vessel shfl has been engaged in cruising amongst theislands of the llervey Group, and was somewhat damaged at Rarotonga by going ashore during a gale at that place. She was ret paired and overhauled, and then wen through the group again to loud. Last evening the Northern S.S. Company's steamer Wellington arrived from Whangarei with a quantity of kauri gum and sundries. She leaves for Whangarei again to-night. The Northern S.S. Company's steamer Ohinemuri, winch took up the Argyle's trip to the Great Barrier on Wednesday, returned last evening, and resumes her running to the Thames to-day. Yesterday the schooner Medora arrived from Awanui aim Whangaroa with a full load of kauri gum ami sundries. She is advertised to receive cargo for Whangaroa, Awauui, and Ohora till to-morrow night. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer 1 e Koa left fur Wellington yesterday morning. Last evening the Northern S.S. Company's steamer Argyle left for Kuaotunu and Mercury Bay. The departure of the Union S.S. Company's steamer Farawera for Southern ports, Hobart, and Melbourne has been postponed' until uoou to-day. The Northern S.S. Company's steamer Clansman leaves for Tauranga this evening. To-day the barque Clan Ferguson will complete her leading of kauri gum and flax for New York, and sail early next week.

The Union S.S. Company's steamer Wathora left Sydney for this port yesterday, Had is due to arrive oa Tuesday next.

The Kauri Timber Company's barque Killarney is undergoing a thorough overhaul at the Hobson-street wharf.

Yesterday the barque Acacia, which left J this port ou Sunday morning last, arrived at ! the Kaipara, where she loads timber for Sydney. The schooner Queen has sailed from Hokianga for Onehnnga. Yesterday the schooner Annie Hill sailed from Kaipara Heads for Lyttelton with a cargo of timber. Orders have been received at Chatham Dockyard for the immediate commencement of a new cruiser to be named the .Minerva. The cost is estimated at about £400,000. The barquentine Cuthona, from this port, arrived at Rarotonga previous to the departure of the ketch Agnes Martin, and was awaiting a favourable wind to leave on a cruise round the group. Nothing further had been heard at Rarotonga regarding the schooner Goldfinch up to the time that the Agnes Martin sailed. The portions of the wreckage washed ashore at Maugaia had been taken to Rarotonga, and identified as portions of tlio missing vessel.

Yesterday the Union S.S. Company's steamer Taviuni left Westport for this port with a cargo of coal. She maybe expected to arrive on Sunday, and is announced to leavo for Suva and Levuka on Thursday next.

The barque Excelsior, ou discharge of cargo, leaves for Sydney direct. Last evening the Northern S.S. Company's steamer Douglas arrived from Whangarei with a cargo of coal. Yesterday the brigantinc Linda Weber left Wellington for Rarotonga. The American ship Southern Cross sailed from Wellington for Boston and New York yesterday, with a cargo of flax. The Union S.S. Company's steamer Mainnapua will undergo some alterations to her passenger accommodation at Wellington next week, the Grafton taking up her running while the alterations are being completed. The last portion of the Newcastle Quay, which has been in process of construction for several years, is now completed and ready for use. It embraces a space of some 200 or 300 feet in length, situated near the 60-ton crane, and now that the wooden hoarding which surrounded it has been nulled down, there is an uninterrupted stretch of quay frontage extending from Newcastle Bridges to theOuseburn, or, roughly, about a mile and ahalf. The whole structure is built of granite, 011 massive iron cylinders, and the portion just finished was part of the earlier quay which at that point subsided many years ago. The quay has been built by the Newcastle Corporation. The largest cargo steamer built on the Clyde—the Bezwada — has had her official trial trip. The speed of the vessel -which has been built by Messrs. Alexander Stephen and Sons, Linthouse. for the British India Steam Navigation Company—was beyond expectations, the representatives of tie.' owners expressing themselves as highly satisfied. The Bezwada carries no less than 7200 tons dead weight. Her dimensions are : — Length, 400 feet between perpendiculars ; breadth, extreme, 4H feet ; depth, moulded, 31J feet. The engines have cylinders 21 inches, 41 inches, and 67 inches diameter by 48 inches stroke, with a working pressure of ItiSlb. Tile vessel is of the spar deck type, with poop, bridge, and topgallant forecastle, and 100 Al class in Lloyd's, and is fitted with machinery for dealing easily, rapidly, and economically with large cargoes of every description. The Bezwada is the third steamer added by Messrs. Stephen to the British India Company's fleet.
