POLITICAL ADDRESSES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, is somewhat remarkable the small amount of information we set from our members when annually addressing their constituents on matters largely affecting the welfare of the community; in the direction of what wo may term domestic legislation. These matters are talked about, but are usually shelved at the end of each session or dealt with by Acts giving powers to local bodies to pass by-laws, as being the most easy way of getting rid of the subjects, in preference to doing as should be done, and is done elsewhere, by legislative enactments and providing machinery to give effect to such statutes. There a i' such subjects as meat and food inspection, dairy and cattle inspection, the adulteration of foods and liquids, the relative position the police of the colony should occupy in the matter of assistance to local bodies (at present left to chance), amendments urgently asked for by the Municipalities and Counties on various subjects session after session, apparently in vain. Are all these matters unworthy the attention of our representatives, or why are they almost systematically ignored ? —I am, etc,, Query. [If a representative troubled himself about useful legislation he would never get reelected. He must cry out for taxing the unearned increment, the abolition of freeholds, and the one-man-oi f vote.—Ed.]
