AUCKLAND INSTITUTE.
A meeting of the members of the Council of the Auckland Institute was hold yesterday, Professor Pond, prosident, in the chair. Some discussion took place in reference to the casts of statuary in the Institute. At a former meeting the Council had agreed to make an offer to deposit them in the Art Gallery, on condition that the City Council agreed to hand over to the Institute in a similar way the Maori carvings at present in the vestibule of the Free Library, so as to be shown adequately in the Maori annexe recently built to the Museum. The Council made the offer considering it expedient that the works of art in the city should be placed together, so as to bo convenient for the inspection of the public and also for the use of art students. The City Council; however, declined to entertain the offer. The Council of the Institute at, the meeting yesterday remitted to; a committee to consider the best method of suitably displaying the statues in the Museum Building. It is proposed to erect a gallery adjacent to the new annexe of the Institute, in which the statues could be placed, with a suitable background and light, so as to be available for art students and for the inspection of the public. This would give room on the floor of the Museum for,a number of zoological specimens which cannot at present be shown. A report-was received from the Library Committee to the effect that the present room bad become too small for the scientific library attached to the Institute, and recommending that the lecture-room be fitted up with shelving as a library. This was agreed to after some discussion. The programme of lectures for the forthcoming winter session was laid before the meeting.
