SCOTT'S FATS.

DECISION OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL. THE SENTENCE TO BE CARRIED OUT. [BY TELF.QKAFIT. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wdneesday. A decision has been arrived at in the \\ atkomitt murder case that the law must take its course, the Executive being of opinion that nothing has been adduced to give reason for altering the sentence of the Court. Immediately the warrant for the execution is received it will be forwarded to the Sheriff in Auckland, and the death sentence carried out within seven days from that date.

Yesterday afternoon the Sheriff (Mr. H. C. Brewer) and the gaoler (Mr. Reston) received telegrams from the Justice Department stating that the Government had decided in the case of Scott to let the law take its course. Mr. Res ton received the telegram about five minutos to throe o'clock. Scott was at the time taking exercise in the exercise yard. He was called into his coll, and the gaoler performed the painful duty of announcing to him the decision of the Government. On coming into the coll Scott was momentarily pallid, and a shadow of anxiety passed over his face, but in a minute or two the remarkable will power which has characterised him throughout re-asserted itself, and he was himself again — the same indifferent, unemotional .nan. Owing to the many delays which have taken place lie was evidently buoyed up with a belief that the sentence would be commuted, and haa never in reality till yesterday, so far as could bo judged, felt the gravity of his position. It is reported that he wrote to his mother recently, and it is evident that this idea possessed him. He has occupied his time for the most part in reading and taking exercise. Now that his hopes have been dashed down and that his fate is sealed, it is believed that he will give more earnest heed to the ministrations of his spiritual advisers. During the absence of Bishop Cowie in the country the Rev. W. Colder, incumbent of All Saints', Ponsonby, has visited Scott. He visited him on Tuesday, and will do so again to-day.
