[BY TKLKORAPK.— ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. Mr, J. D. Ritchie, Secretary of the Agricultural Department and Chief Inspector of Stock, was married this afternoon to Miss M. J. McKerrow, eldest daughter of the Chief Commissioner of Railways. Crabtreo and Goodo were brought up today on another charge of defrauding Staples and Co., bootmakers, of £150. They wore remanded. Two more cases have been set down by the Court of Appeal, viz., Aldrich appeals against conviction by ex-Judge Edwards, and T. K. McDonald and wife v. the Colonial Dank. The value of native reserves in the South Island is assessed at £534,231. The chairman of the Wellington Benevolent Society characterises the Government subsidy system as iniquitous, because ittends to freeze up sources of charity. Still, so long as it is law, he explained, the society intended to demand their share of the subsidy. Pahiatita, Wednesday. In the caso of Clarke against Haggen for criminal libel, the Bench, after consideration, dismissed the case without prejudice, with coats to the defendant. The prosecutor's counsel stated that fresh information would be laid. Oamarl', Wednesday. John Jones and James liallantyno were charged at the Police Court, this morning, with laying " totalisator odds" on the racecourse at a recent mooting. Accused admitted betting, but Mr. Solomon (Dunedin), who appeared for them, submitted that no offence had been committed. His Worship uphold the defence and dismissed the case. DuNEDiN, Wednesday. William Barry, jun., a resident of Otakaia, has been missing since Sunday. He had been drinking heavily. It is believed that he committed suicide. Invkucakoill, Wednesday. A shareholder in the New Zealand and River Plate Land Mortgage Company, in a letter to the Southland Daily No ws, suggests that a similar meeting to the one recently held in Christchurcn should be hold in the other towns of the colony, with a view of bringing about united action, on the part of the New Zealand shareholders. "For why," the writer asks, "should we eond £20,000 out of the colony ?—more especially as shareholders when they invested in the company did so on a distinct and clear understanding that a call would bo deemed a violation of the promises made when the company was formed." Mr. John C. Ellis, of Merrivale, has received a cable stating that the House of Lords dismissed tho appeal from the New Zealand Court of Appeal iu a caso between him and James Aehbury, In which Aehbury was appellant.
