According to the terms of Paterson and Co.'s lease of the Auckland tramways, the firm might terminate the agreement on the 19th of September. This they did by giving the requisite notice, and since that date negotiations have taken place between Messrs. Paterson and Co. for a modification of the terms of the original lease. These negotiations have fallen through, and on October 24 the Assets Company assumed the management of the tramways. During the past year money and valuables amounting to about £1 per head of the entire population of New Zealand were found in the letters opened in tho dead letter, office at Wellington.
