PRESENTATIONS.

At a meeting of the Opotiki County Council on Oct. 10 the Silver medal of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia was presented to James White, of Opotiki, by the county chairman, acting on behalf of His Excellency the Governor, in recognition of White's bravery and humanity in rescuing Robert Rawson from drowning at the Opotiki bar on August 15, 1891. A public testimonial has also been presented to Mr. White, accompanied by a valuable gold stopwatch. On Saturday, October 22, Captain H. Parker, of the Auckland Naval Artillery, presented to Mr. John Lander, the signalman at Mount Victoria, a New Zealand.war medal for services in the Auckland Naval Volunteers at the time of the Maori war. Mr. Lander was an active member of the ftavals, and was with them at the Manukau and the Thames during the time of active hostilities with the natives.

At Waipiro on Oct. 26 J. F. Connolly was presented with a medal and certificate of the Humane Society, for saving life from drowning. The presentation was made by Sir George Whitmore in the presence of a large number of Europeans and Maoris. Connolly has saved life on four different occasions.

Detective Grace, who left Napier for Auckland on October 23, was on October 22 presented with a purse of 78sovs. The Mayor (Mr. Swan, M.H.R.) made the presentation on behalf of subscribers.

At the Wellington City Council on Oct, 13 the Mayor was presented with a silver cradle in commemoration of a, son being born to him during his term of office.

A very pleasing ceremony took place on the 12th October in the entering-room of Messrs. Sargood, Son, and Ewen's wirehouse, the occasion being a presentation to Mr. Veale, who has been in the service of the firm for some years past. It being Mr. Veale's intention to sever his connection with the firm and take up his residence at Suva, his fellow-employees resolved to present him with a token of the high regard and eateam in which he is held by them.' Mr. Tewsley most cordially endorsed the remarks made by Mr. Finlayson, and concluded by calling for three cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Veale and family, which were cordially given. Mr. Veale returned thanks in a feeling manner for the gift and the good wishes displayed, and the ceremony closed. After the usual parade and practice of the Newton Fire Brigade on October 20 the Mayor of the Borough, Mr. S. C. Browu, on behalf of the Fire Brigade Association, presented certificates for three years' continuous service to three members of the Brigade, namely, Branchman F. W. McConnell, D. R. Jones, secretary, and W. Burton, branchman. His Worship made some complimentary remarks in making the presentations, and congratulated the brigade on their general efficiency.

On Saturday evening, October .22, the officers of the -'Telegraph Department, Chrißtchurch, presented a silver-mounted pipe and silver match-box to Mr. R. F. Houlihan, 'on tho occasion of his promotion and transfer to Wellington. The presentation was made by Mr. Mason, the officer in charge, and the recipient was afterwards entertained at a social and smoke concert.

A number of the supporters of Mr. John Stevens at the last election entertained him at Marton at a banquet in the White Hart Hotel, and presented him with a purse of 61 sovereigns. Visitors were present from all parts of the electorate. The Hon. Messrs. Seddon and Carroll were present. On Oct. 27 Mr. T. Culpan, Southland manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Invercargill, who has been promoted to tho superintendent managership of the company in Tasmania, was presented with an illuminated address from the representatives of nineteen insurance companies doing business here.
