Victoria.—Another small breaking down of the hangingwall leader at the 160 feet level, resulted in a pound or two more picked stone being obtained. Cambria.Nothing new has occurred in this mine during the past week, with the exception of starting the fifth stope upon the crops leader above No. 3 level. The leader is about 6 inches thick, and is heavily charged with silica, in which gold is seen pretty freely. Two or three other small leaders are being carried in this stope, the quartz from which is all saved for crushing. The workings upon the other leaders are being conducted as usual with remunerative results. A Is kw Ore-Concentration Process.— It is well known that owing to the refractory character of a portion of the ore won from the reef that is now being operated ! upon by the Norfolk Gold Mining Company in their mine at Tararu only a very small percentage of the bullion it contains is saved by the ordinary battery treatment, the remainder being irretrievably lost through not being able to manipulate the ore in a proper manner. This matter has been occupying the attention of the directors for some time past, with the view of endeavouring to find a remedy for the same, and the result of their inquiries has ended in their making arrangements with Mr. G. S. Pitcairn, representative for the Ore Dressing. and Gold Extraction Company, of London, for the erection of an experimental plant at their battery for the purpose of testing the suitability or otherwise of the Luhrig German process of concentration, the patent rights for which are held by the company. The representative (Mr. Pitcairn) paid a short visit to this district a few days ago, and from the knowledge he gleaned he became convinced that the process was a suitable one for the ore desired to be dealt with, consequently he returned here last evening with an experimental plant, ■which he purposes erecting as above stated, and which he thinks will be in full working order a month hence. Should he be successful with his experiments in this instance, Mr. Pitcairn will take the necessary steps for making his process more widely known throughout the whole of the district.
