THE RUAHINE ASHORE.
FLOATED OFF. On Saturday information was received here that the splendid steamship Ruahine, of the New Zealand Shipping Company's fleet of steamers engaged in the New Zealand and London trade had struck on a reef at Cape Upstart on the Queensland coast, about 350 miles north of Brisbane. The latest reports state that the steamer had been successfully floated and was at anchor under the Cape. It will be remembered that the Ruahine lately visited this port, coming direct from London, via Teneriffe, Cape, and Hobart, and proceeded to the Southern Ports. On discharge of her cargo at the various coast ports she left Port Chalmers for Newcastle on September 9, where she coaled and took. in a quantity of frozen meat for London, and then went on to Rockhampton and Towosville to complete her loading. it was the intention of the New Zealand Shipping Company that the Huahine should come on to Wellington and there complete her loading for London, leaving at about the end of the present month. It is probable, however, that these arrangements will have to be altered owing to the unfortunate accident that has overtaken the' vessel. We presume that if the damage is not of a very serious nature the steamer will proceed to Lyttelton and there.be docked for sighting and repairs. If the damage is more serious than at present appears she will, probably be taken to Sydney for docking. The following are the cablegrams received relating to the disaster :— Towns (Q.), October 15. A coasting schooner reports that the New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s. Ruahine is on a reef at Cape Upstart, off the Queensland coast. ; ;; ;, - Later reports state that the vessel was floated off, and is anchored under the Cape. ; . ■ ■' "
