ROAD BOARD MEETINGS.

« NEWCASTLE. The ordinary meeting of the Newcastle Road Board was held on Wednesday, the 14th instant, at the office of the Board, Present : Messrs. Corboy (Chairman), Foxall, Blackett, and Corbett. Correspondence inwards and outwards having been read, several alterations of names on the roll were authorised to be made. The clerk was instructed to inform the Raglan County Council that the Board would consider the question of Geo. Little's road and apprise the Council of their decision as to what the Board cotild do in the matter. Some accounts were passed for payment. The following copy of a circular addressed to the chairman was read, namely : —" Awatere Road Board, Blenheim, 16th August, 1892. Subsidy to local bodies : Sir, — have the honour to enclose you herewith two copies of a petition on the above subject, which I am circulating throughout the colony among the various local bodies. I beg to request you will kindly bring the matter under the notice ot your Board, and if they agree with its terms, kindly sign aud return one copy of the petition to me, in order that it may be presented to the House at an early date, sending the other copy to the member for your district, with a request that he will support the same. —I have, etc. (signed), H. D. Vavasour, chairman." It was unanimously resolved, " That, alter having carefully considered the circular and petition sent for signature by the Awatere Road Board as a remonstrance against the statement of the Colonial Treasurer on the occasion of his reference to the subsidies to local bodies iu his Financial Statement, this Board fails to discover any just cause for alarm or apprehension as stated in the petition, and, having due regard for consistency and justice, must decline to authorise the petition being signed." The Board then rose.—[A Correspondent.] OPAHEKE. The ordinary meeting of the Road Board was held in the Valley School, on Saturday, the 10th September. Present: Messrs. Kiddle (chairman), Dunn, Markham, VVhelan, and Trail. Messrs. Markham and Whelau reported having inspected the gully near Mr. Deveney's, and let the work to Mr. Stanley, at 6d per cubic yard, for shifting 150 yards : Action endorsed. They had also examined some holes on Barclay's Road, and authorised Mr. Barclay to get four loads of brown metal to repair the same, at a cost of £1. They also reported having examined the big|bridge near Mr. Vince's, and recommended that a new bridge be erected. After some discussion, it was resolved to call tenders for building a new bridge, tenders returnable at the next meeting. Mr. Brisbane waited on the Board, asking that some repairs be done on the swamp near his farm : Resolved to inspect it after the meeting. Resolved to give notice to all owners or occupiers having furze growing on the road adjoining their properties to cut the same, in default of which the Board decided to do the work and charge the cost to the parties concerned. Mr. M. McCabe waited upon the Board, asking the Board to fall the bush on the road adjoining his property. Resolved to inspect the road in question and Bee what is wanted to be done. Mr. Trail reported having gone over the road complained of by Mr. J. Kiely, and, after some discussion, the subject was deferred. Some correspondence was received and dealt with, including a petition against discontinuing the Government subsidy. Resolved to sign it as requested, and to send one copy to Mr. T. Thompson, M.H.R. A copy of the Dairy Industrial Bill was received. A telegram was received from the Treasury, stating that the balance of the subsidy had been impounded on behalf of the charitable aid account. The Board then adjourned to inspect the swamp referred to by Mr. Brisbane. Resolved that Mr. Kiddle lay off the works, and give the clerk instructions, and call for tenders, to be returnable at the next meeting.—[Own Correspondent.]
