THE QUEEN AND SIR G. R. DIBBS.
! Prim Association.—Electric Telegraph.— ! London, September 16. Official circles are sceptical of the existence of the Queen's autograph letter urging the Premier of New South Wales to accept the honour of knighthood. It is stated that after the meeting between the Prince of Wales and Sir Q. R. Dibbs at the Warwick Show, a member of the former's entourage endeavoured to elicit from the colonial Premier what honour would be acceptable to him, implying that he thought the Commandership of St. Michael and St. George was available. Sir George replied that he was willing to accept anything provided it was a personal investiture by the Queen, but he would prefer to be appointed a Privy Councillor or created a commander of the Bath. However, when informed that the latter was impossible, as he must be a companion of the order first, he accepted the K.C.M.G., and owin§ to his early departure for America immediate investiture was conferred instead of waiting for the next batch of honours. This departure is the custom, and not peculiar to the case of Sir George R. Dibbs.
