The other premises were gutted. Little was saved. Messrs. Madden and Gould were uninsured. The building insurances are not known. Chkistchurch, Friday. - A fire broke out about midnight in a new two-storey brick building in Cathedral Square, belonging to W. Roper and Co., wine and spirit merchants. The fire broke out in one of the back rooms on the upper floor, but the body of the fire was situated in a large store on the ground floor. Fortunately, a plentiful supply of water was to hand, and the fire was completely subdued' iu half-an-hour. It is not known how the fire originated. The firm's books and papers wore recovered, also a valuable framed collection of old stamps. Mr. Cohen, solicitor, occupied rooms upstairs, but nothing was damaged there. Considerable damage was done to Roper's stock. Tho insurances are : Building £500, Roper Company's stock £1000 in the Al- | liance office. The firm will bo considerable I losers.
While the fire brigade were engaged at Roper's fire another alarm was given, which proved to be a store and dwelling-house in Sydenham, belonging to Mr. McGarvie. The building was entirely destroyed. A fire was left burning in the kitchen when the occupants went to bed, and probably accounts for the origin. Roper's insurance on the stock is £1500; McGarvie's building is insured in the North British for £200 ; and Buchanan, occupier, has grocery stock insured for £150 in the same office.
