ST. PAUL'S SITE.

_ TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—The idea sketched out by " Commune Bonum" in yesterday's issue is an admirable one, and I only write to support it because there seems a too utilitarian spirit among a section of the City Council, and a failure to rise to the , level of a great opportunity. Thanks to the munificent gift of Messrs. Hay and Honeyman, the city has been rescued from' all chance of losing this magnificent view as public property for ever. The surrounding properties being unbuilt on, or if so to only a very slight extent, might be secured under the suggestion made, and if the owners met the Council in a generous spirit, as I am sure many of them would, it would be well to approach the subject with some elevation of • thought for the future, even if the present had to be slightly burdened. Whatever adds to the beauty of Auckland assists to attract and to make our city famous as a beautiful residential spot. It is love for Auckland that has made so many of its past and present citizens make such splendid gifts, and while I confess to some admiration to the exercise of sturdy plain common sense, and a vigilant eye to finance in public bodies, there are tim«» when it is well to strain a point to secureya thing -that if once lost may be lost for ever. I am ■ sure the Council would be heartily supported if they met any proposal of the kind suggested« in a progressive spirit. I hope the architect who is preparing the plan of a future Queen's park, will submit ' the same to the public view.— am, etc., Bona Vista.
