THE GOLDFIELDS.

Thames, Thursday. May Queen*. —Mr. Hicks, to-day, banked on behalf of the company lOoz sdwt of melted gold, which was obtained as follows —17 loads of quartz treated from the No. 4 reef in the eastern drive ab No. 2 level yielded 4oz Jklwt, or equal to sdwt per load ; 6 loads from No. 4 reef at No. 2 level in the block west of the old section yielded 6oz, which is a payable return, consequently this block will receive further attention shortly. It has been definitely decided to erect the Trenton winding j machinery upon the site of the Queen of May shaft. MoANATArARi.—In consequence of requiring a large quantity of mullock for filling in the stopes upon the Golden Age reef above and the stopes below the 100 feet level, the manager has taken away some of the miners that were employed at the former point and removed them to the Point Russell level for the purpose of extending the eastern drive ahead upon the same body. This work will fulfil the double purpose of prospecting: the reef and providing the necessary mullock for the stopes below, and judging from the results already obtained it is likely to turn out remunerative, for during the last day or two some strong blotches of gold have been seen in two or three of the ribs of quartz of which the reef is composed. Another new work is also about to be commenced at this (Point Russell) level, namely, the testing of the Reuben Parr reef in the eastern drive which was driven I about two years ago. When this drive was i first opened up a little gold was seen in the reef at one point, and at this particular place Mr. Clark now purposes testing the reef by doing a little stoping upon it. The cross and footwall reefs in the stopes above this level are turning out a fair supply of crushing dirt, but very little gold has been seen during the week ; neither has there been much gold seen in the quartz won j from the stopes upon the Golden Age reef I in the stopes above the 100 feet level, or I from the stopes upon the Reuben Parr reef 1 and the footwall ribs of quartz below the 100 feet, consequently so far the amalgam returns at the battery have not been equal to what they were last week. The next retorting will probably take place on Tuesday next. i Warden's Court.— following appli i cations were dealt with by Warden Northcroft to-day :—Waihi Gold Mining Company, for the Ophir and Roaemont special claims, Waihi, adjourned to 23rd June ; J. Saxon. T. A. Dunlop, the manager of the Saxon mine, arrived from Wellington on Wednesday night, and in consequence of what had transpired at a meeting of the company daring his absence, in reference to the Queen of Beauty mine, of which he is the owner, and the terms upon which he would agree to an amalgamation of the two properties, he resigned his position. He requested the directors to convene another meeting of shareholders of the Saxon Gold Mining Company, in order that he might have an opportunity of defending himself, but the directors could not see their way to comply with the request.
