The Wellington Chamber of Commerce has appointed a deputation to wait on the Minister of Justice to urge that last year's Bankruptcy Bill bo reintroduced and passed into law without delay. BIRTHS AND DEATHS. During April the total births in the principal borough? were 409, and the deaths 179. The latter show a decroase of 28 on March. A MINER DROWNED. Ale*. Soulasol, a miner at Callaghans, an old man, aged 61, fell into the tailrace, and was found dead. He was subject to fits. INFRINGEMENT OF THE FACTORIES ACT. At the Dunedin City Court the Drapery Importing Company were fined £,'$ and costs on three informations for keeping upholsterers employed beyond hours. CHRISTCIItntCIt ASSIZES. The Christchurch Supreme Court opens on Monday. There are eleven charges against seven persons. The calendar includes seven charges of forgery, three of larceny, and one of assault with intent.

At a meeting of the Wellington Land Board yesterday morning a resolution was carried " that the Government bo recommended to amend the regulations for village homestead settlements so as to enable one person to select, four sections instead of one as at present." The president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Gale, in an address at a meeting of the Chamber yesterday, dwelt strongly on the necessity of fostering the dairy industry, and moved a resolution calling on the Government to make strenuous efforts to encourage the industry, upon which they would be justified in spending large sums of money; also urging the Government to call a meeting of all persons interested to consider the best steps for the, promotion and extension of this trade. it was mentioned that the Harbour Board wero making enlarged provision to meet the requirements of this branch of exports. One speaker thought the proposals smacked strongly of State socialism, but the resolution was unanimously agreed to.
