A man who had been successful in saving twenty-seven lives during the floods in the Missouri was himself drowned at the finish. He was accorded a great public funeral.
A PARIS TRAGEDY. Paris, May 24. Madame Laymond fatally shot and stabbed Madame Lassione, whom she surprised with Monsieur Laymond in the latter's apartments. They are Parisian society people.
THE PRESS AND DEEMING. London, May 24. . The Standard regrets that the English journals should have encouraged a morbid desire for the details of Deeming's outrages, trial, and his execution. The paper'characterises Deeming as a vulgar ruffian and the vilest of criminals.
THE WAR IN WEST AFRICA. London, May 24. A telegram to hand from the V est Coast of Africa states that King Jobus killed 200 of his followers, including a large number of young girls, in order to propitiate the Deity previous to the battle in which he was defeated and taken prisoner.
THE WAR IN VENEZUELA. New York, May 24. Information has been received from Venezuela that the rebels have been defeated at Bejeima, with a loss of 500 killed and wounded. Latest despatches from Caracas state that the Venezuelan insurgents have captured Coro, and are marching on Laneia.
THE EXPANSION OF COLONIAL TRADE. London, May 24. Mr. Howard Vincent read a paper at the Society of Arts (Mr. Munro, AgentGeneral for Victoria, presiding) on the "Expansion of Colonial Trade. He said the colonies deserved advantageous i treatment, because they would never go to war with the Mother land, whereas foreigners might. A commercial union between England and Australia would be impossible till the Australian colonies were federated. He complained of the unjust attack of the financial press on Australian credit, and defended the colonies for abstaining from assisted immigration.
